Well I'm glad I'm the kind of guy who saves money before buying things. Even as a child, my parents noticed the difference between myself and my brother. I saved money for things I really wanted, he spent money whenever he got it.

I believe we can make a come back. But it will not happen on this current path. The president's new law attempts to fill in a hole by taking dirt from the sides. As the dirt falls in, he throws it out to make room for his continuing work at the sides of the hole. All he ends up with is a bigger hole and then sticks us with it.

I can't believe that he would be enough of an idiot to think that this will work. The only other possibility that I can conjure is he's doing it on purpose!

I think he hit the nail at the end. The consumer knows we have to pull back.
Problem is our Govt hasnt gotten it yet. And this govt probably never will.
"Nancy Pelosi, the giveaway queen" said it all. The economy can come back, but only after a correction, and the longer it takes for them to allow it to be done, the longer and harder it will be.

I am afraid they will not stop tryin till it collapses, and we will have to start over from the 30s.

I'm still of the impression that the collapse is engineered. We're being forced into the economic (and some say literal) "fatal funnel", where accepting socialism, the loss of liberties (perhaps life?), and a big-brother state will be a welcome respite from the chaos that could occur from our seemingly imminent socio-economic collapse.

but the standard of living changing, is that necessarily a bad thing?

From now on, maybe the people will stop borrowing money they can never pay back to have things that aren't necessary... maybe people will learn to work for what they need.

oh, that was silly, wasn't it?

Financial responsibility, a word that is foreign to the government. We the people of the USA are going to quit spending, mainly because we can't afford to. The government on the other hand is going to squeeze out every last dollar they can from us, then collapse our monetary system and "save" us from starvation by enslaving us even farther as subjects of a socialistic system. We are going to have to fight back any way we can, or forever suffer the shame of letting democracy die on our watch. I suggest every US citizen refuse to pay their taxes and talk with their local elected officials about what can be done on a grass roots level. It is obvious this is not going to be done on a federal level as they are about as corrupt as they can be.

Maybe Americans will scale back to a point where the domestically produced oil is enough which will make us all more secure. President Carter was right. President Reagan was wrong.

I hear that, I mean with serious reporting about Jessica Simpson's dress and Linsay Lohan getting drunk they actually have time to say it...

Maybe they cannot deny it anymore, maybe it is even finally affecting them. At a certain point even those with their heads deep in the sand can feel their rears getting kicked

I look at the kids of my friends (and mine too). They have so much more than I did growing up in the 70s. Huge TVs, video games, moutains of toys, cell phones, nicer cars, satelite TV on demand. It's staggering to think of it. One of my nephews has a box, about three by three by three, that's full to the rim with just Power Ranger action figures. There must be 100! And that's just one item in an entire room crammed with toys. My friend's kids have so many Bionicles that they can't possibly know how many they have. They get about 1 a week.

When I was a kid, I had two GIjOEs and a Marx Prehistoric Mountain Playset. I would count every on of my plastic army men when I put my toys away just to make sure one wasn't lost. All my toys fit in one-half of a small closet. The rich kids down the street (their father was a doctor) had a VCR -and- a computer. They were loaded!

Kids today have a standard of living that blows mine out of the water. It's not even close.

I also heard that the average size of homes has doubled since the 1980.

The American dream was oversold in that your goal was for your kids to do better than you. Promoting an ever increasing lifestyle that could only be sustained by consumerism and debt. The American dream should have been based on self sufficiency and independence,
not a facade of wealth. Now that my generation sees the mistake it's all but too late for our kids because they have the vision of entitlement. The idea that our kids generation will suddenly curtail spending and debt accumulation is flawed.
We have tought them well, that you can have and be anything you want because this is America.
The banker's have what they set out to get in the first place...control of the next generation. Checkmate.
