Oh & is it ethnic, or is it religious. ie Sunni/Shia? As Persians are predominantly Shia, with Arabs (and everyone else) being predominantly Suuni.

Very likely. Arabs are primarily Sunni, as well. The two factions of the Religion of Peace have been slaughtering each other since Mohammad died.

I was chatting with an Iranian about this and he says nothing will happen from it because the gov is very effective at making the whackamoles disapear when they start loudmouthing. A bit like what china is doing but he said it wasn't really like the police state in china.. but effectively the leadership of these protests gets disappeared so people don't really have anything to rally behind for long so it will disappear.

All it is is upset over the maximum pressure sanctions and rising cost of living ... gas is still massively cheaper than here but the rise in gas price usually bounces around to the cost of other essential goods, really it is hurting the people who would support the US as the Iranian Guard operates all the businesses so they are going to be ok no mater what. The sanctions on Iranians is just leading to any leadership against the regime being disappeared.
