I'm interested to see what people think of l-oo-ting... Specifically speaking of the people who live in sub-urban and urban areas.. I know some of you guys who have your own fort in the country side are feeling comfortable. lol

Just a hypothetical scenario:
-You live in a sub-urban or urban area
-You see a mob of people start to lo.ot a Wal-Mart
-And you could use some more supplies

Would you join in and why? Would it be to dangerous?

stealing is stealing. Against my morals and it increases the risks one is taking.
The whole point in prepping is to put yourself in a place were your not in an area thats prone to looting and having your gear sorted out so you don't have to go a looting(yarr!!!) anyway. Spending a SHTF situation in the county lock-up cause you got busted stealing sounds like a crapo plan to me.

Interesting question.
Now, am I desperate for supplies or am I just longing to top off the 400 pounds of sugar I have with another 100 pounds?
If desperate (and I mean starvation staring at me desperate!), I would go in the back door and grab what I needed as stealthily as possible from the loading docks/storage area and leave as quickly and quietly as possible.
Otherwise, I would get the dell out of Hodge!
(I'm a chubby chick--hunger brings out my cranky side--starvation would make me lethal! )

no kidding. i think this is one of the best rationales for NOT stealing/looting etc. think if the guards left with everyone in the prison? talk about S#%* out of luck...

as for the walmart situation? id get as far away as quickly as possible i really dont like what mob mentality is capable of (heck they are looting in the first place) not to mention I was rooting for the Koreans big time when i watched those vids of the riots/looting in LA so that would make me kind of a hippocrite.

I prep so I dont have to be a part of that. BUT if my supplies didnt last me and i was actually desperate I think any stores would be fair game at that point (i'm thinking in the EOTWAWKI, mad max, 28 Days Later situation)

just my .02

You did not mention any type of emergency condition.

Was there a bad court decision (Rodney King) leading to a riot?
Was there a 7.0 earthquake?
Was there a Cat 5 hurricane?
Are we in the middle of a global thermonuclear war?
Did a large comet strike Australia?

Please define "you could use more supplies" and also state the nature of the problem (is it just SHTF or TEOTWAWKI).

Lemme see here......a mob.

When the FBI was using our facility to hold a witness they gave us some specialized training. Their training on mob behavior was that the collective intelligence of a mob lowers to the intelligence of the dumbest person in the mob. Someone in the mob may have a gun.

Yeh, I wanna join that group.

Other than that I really, really dislike people who take what is not theirs.

On the whole, I would say no, but if I have a lethal militant redhead at home saying I need some more flour, I just might go against my better judgement.

Looters I have feeling that local groups will organize to prevent and combat looting very quickly and I would not trust someone I knew to be a looter. It also exposes one to extra risks and holing up with a pre-event stockpile of goods is a better idea. Besides I have peppered some of my stuff in case I am overrun or looted.

I would be really be desperate to loot. It would be couple of weeks after the s**t hit the fan and my family would have to be hungry before I would steal.

I have to say I would stay clear, unless I was starving to death. It's against my morals, and I really don't like groups of people, especially despirate ones.

Looters become desperate and, desperate people do desperate things. Mob mentality rules and any body who gets in the way are fair game.
I would stay away from the situation and be very concerned about who they are going to loot next. Your home is your castle/fort, but when this becomes unsafe or about to be over run by the mob, its time to get out as quickly and safely a possible.

Its against my morals ... with that said, I'm a realist. When the supplies run out and the family is hungry, I have no problem taking from corporate America. Corporate America has had no problem looting my pockets and it’s not a emergency situation.

Would I loot from John Doe down the street, I would hope not. Would I loot big, multibillion dollar greedy, wallyworld?

Hells yea, and I’d loose no sleep about it!

Yep, they tend to do crazy things.
Same reason I'd steer clear.

if mass looting is going on, you can bet your ass no cops are around, they're probably joining in and then getting home to their families to save their own asses.

and yes, if society broke down and all hell would break loose, i would loot stores and mega stores of the like (not buildings where people still reside), the owners would either be dead or long gone with their vault, and if they were there, i'd leave them alone then, when I have family starving my morals go out the window for that and my responsibility to my family takes over. Leaving it there will only let someone else get it, if Society got that bad, by the time it got back to normal, all that food would be wasted anyway.

I agree with Doc on this one,If your family are going to starve and you preps have ran out what are you to do,Some times and in dire times morals go out the window.
My family is my first moral obligation.

If this thread question is in a global thermonuclear warfare/massive asteroid context then I wouldn't pass up a single resupply, so long as there would be no risk to my life in taking it. If I need a moral compass to do this then I will declare myself a spiritual aboriginee.

I would only "scavenge" for supplies from abandoned stores that have already been picked through. I would not partake in that first brick to the windows. I would only "take" what others left behind. If I were starving and looting were currntly going on I would probably jack a few cans of beans or somthing but only If I would remain safe and what I was doing wouldn't get me into harms way.

Now if the store had already been looted and no one else was there yet there were still things useful to a survivalsit inside you better believe I will back the pickup right inside and grab a cart. (with lookouts posted of course so we can boogey out when we are ntoiced)
