Default Custom Camper / Off-the-Grid Trailer Resources

Advertise Here

Hey,

This may sound like an obscure request, but I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help.

Does anyone here have any links or resources they could share with respect to custom-built (DIY) campers/off-the-grid travel trailers? Ultralight builds, something no more than 1,750 pounds. Figured with a little sweat equity and handy skills, one could probably build something unique for a decent price.

Thanks in advance.

I thought about building one but after I did my research, I thought it would be cheaper to buy rather than build. So, I bought a 8ft. Alaskan Camper (slide in). I'm presently working on the truck that would haul it but will add a 2nd battery under the hood that will be tied into the alternator which will give power to the camper. I will probably put solar panels on the roof too.
Check out desktodirtbag.com he has a lot of good ideas about building one from scratch.

We built one (sort of two actually). They were a bit heavier than what you want since we designed for ruggedness, long life, low maintenance. I think our living pod ended up about 5000 pounds and our garage pod is about 2000 pounds.

I had a long build thread on it but photobucket decided to change their business model from free to unaffordable and took a dump on all our photos.

It looks like this though (welded steel frame, all aluminum sides and solid aluminum sheet roof):

+1. I remember that thread Fermion did on his pods and truck. Thing was smart, practical as hell and a badass build. Good concept.

When you go to tnttt.com, check out the "cargo trailer" subforum. I've been intrigued by the idea of taking an enclosed cargo trailer and converting it to a livable space without all of the complexity and gadgetry you find in modern travel trailers. You may have to order a trailer with enough width and height to be comfortable.

I'm also a member over at ExpeditionPortal.com. There is a myriad of subforums, depending which way you want to go.

There are also a variety of pop-up bed toppers for a truck. Not really a DIY approach unless you are a skilled fabricator and could copy the design:

Another good one (I'm a member of) is Skoolie.net

It's dedicated to bus conversions but will give you plenty of ideas. Everything is DIY.
