I have been. I care nothing for politics or for whatever cause that people are trying to prove: I simply want to know if a statement is accurate or not.

I cannot check this one out for a few days, which is a shame but the real world has me hopping. I have got to tell you, though, if you want unaltered data it is not usually to be found in the global warming camp. They "smooth" things, "average" things, and do other things that are incredibly frustrating to people who want to see for themselves what the weather is doing.

The folks who talk about weather cycles tend to have the most unaltered data, and I do not always agree with their theories but I treat their data with more respect that I do anything that has been "smoothed"

I may have trouble with wet stumps but the rest burns. Loggers burn huge slash piles with stumps and wet wood. They start them and don't tend them at all.

It's not just Brazil, it's a multitude of countries that hold the Amazon. If you honestly don't see why losing significant portions the Amazon to deforestation, fires, etc. is concerning, then you obviously shouldn't be debating this topic.

What other countries does the Amazon flow through? (Rhetorical question.)

Well, I learned here on this thread that the Amazon can't burn, because it is a rain forest and live wet trees can't burn.

And as a corollary, anything that burns was already dead, so it ain't gettin' any deader!

Probrem solved!

Love the way she says probrem.

The estimated number of acres burned in Brazil since January is slightly less than 880,000.

The total acreage of the Amazon rain forest is around 1 billion acres.

Last year over 5 million acres burned in Siberia and over 1 million burned in CA alone.

They do that with the sugar cane crop on Maui, late October... huge field fires. I was talking with one of the locals about it.

You mean, the real numbers that double what you said in just Bolivia alone?

Second, do you even know what I mean when I say holistic? Because if you can't understand how that type of approach is essential for a topic like this, you already are trying to push water up a hill.

What is it that makes you think that CNN is a reliable source? Drugs? Mysticism? Money?

Fire doesn't destroy land, it simply causes change, it's part of mother nature. Man has used fire for thousands of years. A lot of forests have to have it to thrive.

I'll probably get 15 yards for "piling on", but this needs to be read. Guy is actually a TIME magazine "Hero of the Environment". His credentials actually look pretty good. Bet he won't be contributing to the New Left Times anymore, though.

Interesting comment he makes about Macron being hostile to Brazilian agriculture.

As the G7 summit was wrapping up yesterday,Trump offers $22 million to Brazil for forest fire fighting and the Brazillian government rejects the offer.
Looks like Trump Derangement Syndrome is strong with them.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean.

You want to avoid reality and focus on emotional BS, which explains your use of CNN as a source of "real numbers".

The vast majority of what is burning is previously cleared land, not old growth rain forest, and the number of fires this year is about average for the last 15 years.

The media circus is hyping it into a "crisis" and you're falling for it.

No. Remember that Bolsonaro is the Brazilian Trump. Fact is that Brazil doesn't NEED major cash to fight fires that really aren't a planetary crisis. The offer was made (and declined) for political optics.

(Interesting side note: Bolsonaro eased up on prohibitions on the private ownership of firearms, and the murder rate is reported to have dropped 20%.)

Every year, farmers in the Amazon set fires to clear agricultural land during the dry season starting in August, but this year may be a record-setter, not for the number of fires, but for the global outrage.
Quote:
“I think the media focus on this is misplaced and exaggerated, as is virtually every weather-related story that appears these days,” said Mr. Spencer, a former NASA scientist who does consulting on global crop-market forecasting.

“The driest years in Brazil will have the most fires set by farmers,” the professor at the University of Alabama at Huntsville said in an email. “That isn’t a climate story, it’s normal agriculture in a country where 50 million people living in poverty are trying to survive.”
