Why am I not surprised. Instead of debating the merits of both, this turns to insults.

3 trolls popped up out of the woodwork in this thread already. That may be some kind of record.

Back to the OP, firearms are obviously the better choice.

Non lethal has it's place. Not every altercation has to end in the use of lethal force nor should it IMO. I perfer a stun gun to OC spray for my non lethal option though.

Firearms are the best, but after the incident, according to Colonel David Grossman, you may have to spend a lot of time in the slammer. When I began taking tactical handgun, our instructor, a LEO, said that it was very likely that we would lose our weapon or go to jail. Now if we are in jail we can complain but..... Grossman said that he carries pepper spray as a first line of defense and if the spray is not effective, will use his firearm so that the court realized that he tried to stop the criminal with low force first. Since watching one of Grossman's online videos on that subject, I now have spray and a firearm in my EDC bag.

Sometimes it may just be fun to unload another mag on the scumbag.

Didn't vote. What is best wrench or screwdriver?

You can't shoot everyone that shoves you. Each weapon has their use.

In NYC you can't carry guns, tactical folders or batons. Pepper is your choice and maybe a neck carry knife.

If you have no faith in pepper, test it. Spray some in the air and walk into the mist. Or rub the dewdrop left on the nozzle and rub your eyes.

Cone spray gets around sunglasses and aim issues. Pepper is just another tool in the toolbox. In NYC / NJ you get watered down pepper and it still hurts. But test it yourself. Everyone is different to tolerance.

This comment is a good opportunity for a teachable moment. If you are CHL/CCW and involved in a deadly force encounter comments you make on social media (Yes this is social media) may be later used against you during an investigation or trial.

I have a feeling that a bullet in the skull likely has more stopping power than a can of bug spray.

If you come at me in any aggressive way, shape or form then you are implying the use of force and I will counter your use of force with my use of force: a pistol. If you do not attack me, then I will be nice to you as well. Cross over the line and start to use the threat of violence and all bets are off. A raised voice does not constitute violence. Moving towards me and trying to hit me does put you in danger. I have seen pepper spray fail too many times for me to feel comfortable using it in a bad situation.

Because that's the culture that is allowed to persist here. Not to mention the OP is just trolling, you know that, right?

The biased articles he linked are rife with inaccuracies too. Since I am considered an "expert" (though I don't like that term) on the subject matter, I'd be happy to break them down, but what's the point? The whole thread is a false equivalence as pointed out several times already.

Also, why hasn't this been moved to the proper sections... "Non-lethal/Firearms?"

Excellent points.

And I have an open ended challenge to anyone the speaks out of turn when it comes to the effectiveness of OC on humans...

Anyone who doubts it, can arrange a meet with me and I'll make you a believer.

Rethink that brother. Stun guns are virtually worthless for SD. If you need an OC recommendation, just let me know.

Can you expand on this? I've allowed my self to be stunned and it put me down immediately. My reasoning for a stun gun is that in a hand to hand struggle that does not require lethal force OC spray could incapacitate me as well, inhibiting my ability to escape.

My goals in a hand to hand struggle with an opponent more skilled/stronger than me are:

1. Keep possession of my firearm. Obviously I can not allow my opponent to access it under any circumstances. So to that end I must...

2. Incapacitate my opponent as effectively and quickly as possible. So that I can...

3. Immediately remove myself from threat and control my situation.

I'm always looking for ways to improve my kit, tactics and abilities. I'd appreciate any recommendations you have.

Chris

Funny story but highlights stupid (in this story I was the stupid one ). I had an incident one night and pulled my pepper spray out. It was a type that had a safety on the can. So I switched that off. Incident resolved without use of it so I put it back on the duty belt forgetting to reengage the safety). Next night, we were grabbing up cones to block a parking lot off. (Police work isn't always exciting )

A few of them were stuck under a snow plow so I bent down to tip the plow over and ended up getting sprayed by my own OC when my vest pressed up against it. Since it was in the front of my duty belt, I took a hefty dose to my groin. Man, that sucked. Two showers later and switching to a pair of blue jeans I had in my locker, I still felt it for the rest of the night.
