Actually they found this out a lot earlier but didn't do anything about it until vietnam.

Really a person on their own is always going to be carrying the wrong gun for at least half the situations they want one for. This is why we have mixed unit tactics.

Yep. An AR, or any other gun with reasonable accuracy past 200 yards is wasted without a scope.
I'm interested to hear your reasoning on these statements as fact.

Where are your actual sources for this. Some armies did quite well in Vietnam and were carrying the FN SLR in 308. A lot of European groups and contracting companies were requesting 308 in Afghanistan when I was there as well. The logistics capabilities of 223 cannot be debated but in the regular resupply scenarios of the military, you can get by with a heavier ammo type, especially if your military system is still set up around it. Certainly not 'screwed' if a 308 is 'all you have'.

I agree with jmanatee. In reality no one wants to get shot, even with a 22 so it will repel an attacker. A 22 will take a wonder variety of game. Can't see taking a few squirrels for the stew pot with my AK. I would take my 10/22. It is quite accurate out to 100 yards and is quiet enough. In a needed stealth situation a makeshift suppressor can be made with household supplies. Duct tape a 2 liter bottle with cotton in it to an AK for up close work and see what happens when you pull the trigger.

If for whatever reason you can only grab / carry one, which of the 3 is it?

METT-T dependant...

AK47 or AR10 in .308 is preferred. Nothing says I hate you quite like a .30 caliber bullet.

It depends. Iron sights in "basic configuration only"? Attachments? Am I stuck with FMJ ammo or do I get my choice of ammo? Various situations would tip me in any of those directions.

Assume they are all modded with your preferences, and you have equal ammo for all choices. Which one do you "grab and go"

The choice (under the conditions defined in the original post) is obvious.
The AR15 in 5.56
Why?
Easiest to source ammo. Because a gun without ammo is a stick...

I would feel well served by my 03. Needs no special things to make it work, ammo easy to find, rugged as hell, exceptionally accurate, and hits like a ton of bricks. With AP it is pretty good a turning cover into concealment. It is also sufficient for any large animals that pose a threat.

In Red Dawn them kids had a truck. I have a truck. So based on that I am taking ALL my guns and ammo with me.

Wait for it... wait for it... guaranteed the OP says "Well pretend you didn't have a truck then."

I don't pretend.

Well then you might want to hunker down in place. Or get a bigger vehicle. But at least you will have more than one rifle.

M14

I chose it because I have no experience with either the AR or the AK.
