AR-15

Easy easy choice.

Most common rifle in the US=most spare parts and magazines

Lightest gun, lightest ammo. Simply the best compromise.

AK if I was outside the US. No problem with the weapon, just not nearly as logistically strong as the AR is in the US.

My first choice gun in my home armory is an AR-15, chambered in 7.62x39, but if I have to bug out it gets left in favor of the 556 ARs.

There is no situation where I would pick an M14. It was obsolete before it was even released and dumped faster than any other service rifle for the same reasons.

I don't even like ARs that much...but logistically there is no other choice for a prepper. Anything else besides ARs and Glocks in the US is just having fun. When it comes to practicality there are only a few choices. Ballistics become irrelevant compared to logistics. IMO the best prepper gun is always going to be the most common, boring choice available in that class for whatever place and time they live.

A 10/22, Glock 17, AR 15, Remington 870 Remington 700, or a parts compatible clone of those, everything else is just playing with yourself.

Which is sad if your a gun enthusiast but never let enthusiasm talk you into impractical choices....at least until you have the bases covered. Not of those guns are my favorite guns but I have them just for sheer practicality.

While I agree the AR-15 provides a lot of spares, AKs are very prevalent too. Plus 7.62 ARs are much rarer, so you lose a lot of commonality of barrels and such.

I pick an AK due to the larger round. 5.56 is just not as hard hitting. Plus you can lube an AK with mud and still shoot it. Lol

And if we had to go for commonality, then just go with a 9mm AR that uses Glock mags.

Yep. I think its best of both worlds but due to it needing a different barrel, bolt and magazine than a 556 AR I would never take it with my in SHTF or have it as my only gun even though its my favorite rifle and the one that I shoot the most.

I have the AK for backup if the gun doesn't last as long as the ammo, and half a dozen 556 ARs for general use and backups. Boring, relatively poor preforming and expensive ammo but logistics trumps everything else so I have a bunch of them.

No...why take all the disadvantages of a pistol and rifle? PCC's are the worst of both worlds. Carry a real pistol or carry a real rifle, or carry both. Don't carry a gun as weak as a pistol with the size and weight of a rifle (and ammo that weighs as much or more), if your stuck with pistol ammo for some reason then learn to shoot the pistol better. PCC's don't add enough power or accuracy to justify all the bulk and weight. They are for people who like the fun of shooting a rifle but want cheaper ammo. Nothing wrong with a fun gun but make sure you have real ones too for when times get tough.

I guess I can't play this game because in my view if I can only take ONE then I did a really lousy job of prepping.

Just assume a hypothetical situation where you can only grab one - maybe you need to recon an area or you don't have time to gear up properly for whatever reason here.

If your grabbing more than one rifle at a time then your either playing a video game or in really good shape. 90% of the time I would rather carry one rifle and extra ammo for the rifle instead of even a pistol. If I'm carrying two rifles its just between my car and a shooting bench.

Most of us HAVE more than one rifle. Almost none of us will be walking around with more than one rifle at a time other than when we are loading/unloading them. If I'm gonna be out walking around, 90% of the time I'm gonna have one of my ARs. It's my respond to a threat rifle. Sure I have specialty rifles for hunting small game, or big game, but most of my concern will be for my safety, so 90% of the time I'll take the defensive weapon.

AR-15 if everything has gone sideways.

For a recon with potential for longer range slower shots then Remington 700 30.06 or .243 with a good scope.

A SCOPED AR rifle of some kind. The idea is not to try to turn the rifle into a sniper rifle but to help enhance its overall accuracy and distance for longer shooting. Take a look at what the Filipino Marine Scout-Snipers have done with their older M-16s. They re-worked a number of them, mounted scopes on them and use the heavier 62 grain bullets for sniping. It works well for them. We could be doing the same thing over here.

IF done right there is no wrong answer because any of those 3 could get you the one you don't have but feel you need.

That being said I dislike AR's but AR would be my answer of the 3. It is a common rifle. SHTF i'd hopefully be running something in 30-30 with a 9mm on my hip. I just prefer the take down power and CQC range of a 30-30 even with the low round count. Would put some fear even in the desperate imho.

If you want 30-30 power then carry an AK or AR in 7.62x39, thats all its really is, a semi-auto 30-30.

Which would be my choice, (but not an m-14 ewww) IF I also had a couple guys with ARs or AKs to back me up. As they quickly found out in vietnam, your screwed if all you have is a .308 and SHTF.

Actually they found this out a lot earlier but didn't do anything about it until vietnam.

Really a person on their own is always going to be carrying the wrong gun for at least half the situations they want one for. This is why we have mixed unit tactics.

Yep. An AR, or any other gun with reasonable accuracy past 200 yards is wasted without a scope.

Any of them will work. I have shot the full auto versions of all on them and a heck of a lot of others. Yea really great for throwing a lot lead down range and making noise, not so useful at catching dinner at 500 yards.

I have no desire to be Rambo and take on a division, I'd rather shoot a deer or and elk and even better birds and other small game.

I agree with this.

I would never choose to be in a fire fight unless defending my property (where I have more weapons then one). In SHTF even the smallest wound is life threatening. It is my belief that if fleeing, it is more likely you would need the weapon to hunt animals then kill man.

You may laugh but,... If I could only choose one to run off into the woods with,... It would be my .22 LR with pockets full of ammo.

Very common, can carry lots of ammo, great Small game hunter (and it can take a deer with the right shot or shots), sound doesn't carry as far when shot. And it can be used in self defense.
