I went out one day and patterned about 10 different kinds of 00 buck in my Rem 870 a couple of years back. Targets were placed at 25 yards.

The clear-cut winner just happened to be the cheapest of the lot as well. Remington 3" Magnum 00 buck produced a nearly perfect 9" circle at 25 yards time and time again. Can be had at Wal-Mart for around $11 for a box of 15.

I usually use the cheap stuff and have never had a problem with reliability or shot pattern.

Winchester Super X 00 Buck
Remington Express 00 Buck
Federal Premium 00 Buck

All will work just fine.

I'm fond of #1 and #4 buck myself

#4 buck is a .24 caliber pellet and with a 2 & 3/4 shell you can have about 27 pellets per round.

its what we use for "dog hunting"... (thats deer hunting with dogs btw :-D )

I guy I know shot a doe on a dog drive with a 3" #1 buck. I looked like about 7 pellets hit it, and it seems to have done a pretty good job.

just my 2 cents....

I've had really good consistency out of S&B 12 pellet OO buck. Oddly enough, considering that it doesn't have a shot cup to protect the shot. It's also some of the lowest priced buck. Good performance doesn't have to come at a price. Slugs are another example. One of the best performing slugs from a smooth bore is the Brenekke KO by Kent Cartridge. And it's also one of the lowest priced. Though it's sure hard to find in recent years.

I believe the Federal number is LE132 for that round. Great round! We use them in our 870s at work with the 12 and 18 inch barrels. They pattern great at 10 and 20 yards (our qualifying range).

I prefer federal but it's not the only viable choice. Patterns well for me.

Bulk packs on line will be your best value. Try a few kinds first though. Every SG patterns differently. You need to find what runs good in yours.

I've got a Remmington 870 w/vent rib cut to a 22" barrel and added a 3" poly choke. The shorter barrel make the 870 much more maneuverable tool in close quarters but the poly choke allows me to instantly dial a different choke and gives me the versatility of game size, shot size and patterning. The best of all options, especially with 00 buck.

sellier and bellot

When my buddy and I was doing pattern testing a few years ago, sellier and bellot gave the best pattern, and the vast majority of the rounds fired were sub-sonic (less then 1,000 fps).
