A humor website/magazine had a serious prepping article? I don't think so.

Yeah, this article brings it home doesn't it? America is in trouble if a major disaster hits us. Because we are more interested in writing a snarky worthless article that sheeple can chuckle at then getting serious about how to really prepare. That's the reason so many are going to die.

Reminds me of my wife a couple years ago when I was a closet prepper (prepped and stored everything at my warehouse), we watched a history channel special about a SHTF situation spreading through the country and a family bugging in until they were out of everything and then bugged out, good show about what really happens with commentary on human behavior interjected into the scenes, pretty scary stuff.

After watching it, she wanted to get a case (yes a single case) of bottled water...

She is on board now, but that was a shocking response to me, I think many many sheeple are like she was, they only need a little preps so they can hang on for the government to arrive and save them without any thought of the possibility of government never coming.

I'm of the opposing mindset, get out of dodge and pray the government never comes to "help me".

What is absolutely frightening is the stories coming out of Serbia. Ethnic cleaning and a civil war, the absolute worst of all possible calamities. Sheeple would die in droves.

Every time there is a hint that there might be some sort of weather related event around here, people swarm to the grocery stores, and strip the shelves ... folks driving in circles, waiting for a parking space so they can go get those last minute items. It happens all the time. Me, I go shopping in the middle of a weekday, when the weather is nice. The parking is easier, the lines shorter, and I'm more likely to be able to get what I came for. I recall a year ago, I was in the process of removing every last 1lb can of tomatoes from the shelf, when a soccer mom type stopped to gawk.
"why are you buying all of the tomatoes?" she asked, obviously clueless.
"Because they are on sale for 99 cents, right now. Come late winter, early spring, they'll cost a buck and a quarter. I eat a lot of chili during the winter, and I like paying 99 cents a lot more than paying $1.25" I replied. The lady shook her head, and pushed her cart laden with expensive perishables down the isle. Within a week, I knew that the groceries she had bought would be gone.
I still have most of those tomatoes. Chili, anyone?

I think a lot of it is that the people who finally decide to prepare, simple have no idea how. That's what the article brought forward in a humorous way.

Back before Y2K, I talked to a neighbor about the possibility of services being interrupted. Her reply was "I better buy lots of candles and incense". OK, I'll give her points for the candles. Her son went out and bought cases of canned beans. He doesn't eat canned beans and had a heckuva time using them up afterwards. Neither even considered water, nor had the faintest idea what to do about it when I brought it up.

This is the same lady who constantly came over to borrow a flashlight when we had a blackout. Our area out of town was prone to them. One time I bought her some flashlights. Next blackout, she came over to borrow batteries. Hers were dead and she hadn't replaced them. I told her I wasn't going to loan her anymore stuff if she couldn't even bother to prepare her family for something as simple (and common) as our blackouts.

One day she told me proudly that she had bought candles for the blackouts. Next blackout, she was knocking on my door to borrow matches to light them with. Some people just don't get it.

I have a relative on the East Coast who was affected by Irene. He told me that he was going to "prepare" by taking a nap, then having his wife go to the store. Totally serious. When his wife got to the store, everything that they wanted (bottled water, canned food, and batteries) was cleaned out. Both of them were in a bit of a panic.

This article may not be serious, but based on my relative's comments, I think it reflects the truth on how non-preppers think about things.

The worst part about Irene is that (at least where my relative lives) it was an almost non-event. My relative called it, "Hurricane Hyperbole." After going through Irene this year, and the hurricane last year (I don't remember the name) and nothing happening, I highly doubt that he'll take any steps if another one comes again because all the dire predictions didn't come true.

[edit] If something really big ever happens, people like this will be shocked and totally unprepared.
