Just wondering if anyone has any favorite backcountry places that are open to the public to do some primitive camping and practice shelter making, botany skills, etc. far away from any civilized areas. I've been looking into the mon national forest and thought this might be a good place to ask around. Thanks!

I spent some time in the Cranberry Back country. It used to classified as a wilderness, but it's not now. You can take a wagon or anything with out a motor in now.

We used to have to walk in,with backpacks. It's been a good while since I've been in there.

I'm in the northern panhandle..the armpit of Wv...

I 2nd the gorge! Lots of areas we use to get intentionally lost in there. Just gotta deal with the occasional raft full of idiots depending on where ya get lost. We go below the dam just for that reason.

Dolly Sods Wilderness

Been awhile, a different part of WV that time forgot much like Canada's north country.

I agree with all of these. The new river gorge is literally my back yard. Now i work less than 30 min from Cranberry glades. I go there from time to time, it is great and a large area to get away from people in. Dolly Sods is on my bucket list of places to stay in WV, it looks beautiful!
