Have you ever seen some strange stuff out there? I'd love to hear about it.

I've seen some weird and fascinating things out there.

Tons of stolen cars.

Pot fields.

Poaching dump sites. The biggest having over two hundred deer and elk carcasses. Funny thing about that one is I had to fight with the lady on the poaching hotline to take the info down. The wildlife officers were much more interested once they saw the spot. Never heard what happened.

Tons of garbage, some toxic.

Apparently porn and construction items are the two most popular items to dump.

I've found old oil lamps, 70 year old beer cans.

We once came across a logging dump pit. The area had been logged off 80 years before, and we found there garbage pit. Lots of spoons old jars and cans, different tossed aside items.

I've seen old mining troughs.

I'm sure as the thread progresses I'll remember some other things.

One of the coolest I ever found took me a bit to figure out. We were bush whacking our way towards a river, when we came to the last rise before the long flood plains of the river we saw the outline. The whole area along the sides of the river is filled with 29 yo Alders, that have regrown since the St Helens eruption sent a massive mud flow(lahar) down the river.

What we saw looking down that hill was weird, it was a huge outline of a rectangle with these trees growing all over it. The fact that there was something unnatural about the area was just two lines that formed the corner of the rectangle. Even as we approached and saw it's massive size we still couldn't figure out what it was. It was only when we were standing right next to it that we saw the twisted metal on top. It was the mangled remnants of a guard rail. What we were looking at was a two lane bridge 150 ft in length! Complete with guard rail, frame and asphalt.

The Lahar had ripped it away and carried it close to a mile down stream before it came to rest 400ft plus from where the natural flow of the river is. Now nature has completely covered it. Few would hike down there, if they did it would be hard to spot. But it remains as a small sign of the destruction the eruption did. This area is a little over 12 miles from the mountain.

Edit: I found some pics taken a little over 3 years ago of that bridge.

Looking down on it.

Standing next to it.

My brother and son(right) on top of it. Just 3 years, wow! They grow up fast.:(

My Dad, my brother, some other kin and I were out in the woods and we found the hulk of an old Ford Model-T Coupe'. It was badly rusted but, it could have been restored, still had a lot of the wood floorboards in the box. Dad, my brother and I went back the next weekend to get it but it was already gone. None of the others who were with us had gone back to get it so, we don't know where it went.

when i was younger i went with my buddys to their camp in tionesta pa. we took a walk into the woods and came upon these rocks, these things were huge, about 10ft square and 30 ft long.picture a mobile home but solid rock.
i was amazed because it looked like they were cut, had nice straight sides and top. my buddys told me thats nothing, get on top, so i did and couldnt believe it. the rocks were set in a way that it looked like a giant foundation.
there were 4 of them in a perfect square and the seems were about 6" apart but perfectly allined and on one end there were 2 sticking out about 10' apart like a foundation for a garage.

there were a bunch of these formations in the area, it was a flat area on top of a mountain with trees all around that were 20 to 30 inches across so they are old trees and some were growing in the center of the foundations.
to this day it boggles my mind as to how they got like that and why so many.

One year, hunting in Wyoming, we were waaay back up in the ridges, probably twenty miles from even the dinkiest gravel road.

There were two semi trailers sittin' in a park (level grassy area) fully loaded with bran-new snowmoblies (in their shipping crates.)

We got out of there fast.
I would set up a game cam and seem what happens

One time, a few of my relatives found a pair of binoculars just sitting on a stump way out in the forest. I've personally found some knives, a working flashlight, several refrigerators and whats left of some sort of wrecker. Personally, the weirdest thing was a full dresser drawer, filled with some men's clothing, just sitting out in the forest, about a mile and a half from the main road.

I was hiking in Utah around one of the early Uranium mines that's been abandoned for the past 40 years or so. I came across this old rusted out half-track. I passed it again on the way back after sunset, and I'm pretty sure it was faintly glowing green. It may just have been my imagination, but it was still pretty cool.

Also, out by Death Valley someone dragged a bathtub about half a mile from the nearest road and filled it with marbles. Kind of a weird thing to run across in the desert.

in the middle of the desert on top of an extinct volcano we found a cement building with about 20 cement towers all around it. some old machinery inside the building. 1929 was above the door. after some research we found that in the 1920s a guy built a wind powered power plant up there. He ran out of funding just after getting it built. It was at a place called pahvant butte in utah.
last week I found some shooting sticks

Thanks
Did search on that and this is what I came up with
We later learned that, in 1923, a man was hired and paid by Millard County to construct a windmill site for the generation of electricity in nearby communities and farms. Unfortunately, before construction was completed, this character disappeared with the money, leaving behind the skeleton that remains today. Needless to say, the money was gone, the man was gone, so the windmills never materialized. They figured he'd headed south for Mexico to enjoy his ill-gotten fortune.

Pics are on the site

I had a very large wooded area behind my childhood house. I spent many days building tree forts, setting leg traps, camping etc. as a kid. One day I came upon a goat. It was laying on the side of the trail, I assumed it was dead. I poked it with a stick; much to my shock it was alive and well. It jumped up took one look at me and ran like hell, I was running in the direction BTW :). No farms anywhere in the area, to this day I wonder where that animal came from. Maybe someone’s Easter dinner had ran away.

i got a doosie...

we own about 300 acres off of a lake behind an air base. my grandfather spent alot of his life turning it from a swamp into a usable piece of land complete with roads and ditches.

while digging one of the ditches with his back hoe, he dug up two large steel containers, cylindrical in shape with with numbers and symbols printed on the container.

he of course opened them, the first one was empty. the second had a wierd looking kind of machine in it. he contacted the air base, since it most likely belonged to them. they came and checked it out, and told him it was an f-16 jet engine, or at least part of it. they took the engine of course, but let him keep the empty containers. strange it would be buried out there, especially buried rather deep, wouldnt think that would be something the military would misplace.

I don't have any forest nearby but I've ran into a few strange things in the desert during my offroading and exploring. Found a tank of the same poison that killed all those people in India way back when. I called that one in for safety reasons.

I found a couple cases of trioxane fuel tabs sitting down in a gulley once. Found an incendiary grenade another time. Being a military city, I guess those two aren't that odd.

I think the wierdest thing I found was when hiking in the mountains as a kid. About a square mile was strewn with bras. They weren't in a pile, just strewn around all over the place. Almost looked like an airdrop.

I found an old model A ford once while hunting many years ago.
As a young boy I spent a summer in Missouri with my Dad. He was inspecting on a pipe line back then. We found an old home way back off the beaten trail in the Ozarks. The house, barn and other outbuildings were still intact and all of the furnishings were still in the house. Also had an attic full of canned goods. A complete wagon was in the barn with many tools also. One room in the house had dozens of letters scattered across the floor that were from a WW11 soldier. I still have an old hymnal I found in the house. We found out later on that the family members were all there one day in the early '50's and the next day were all gone leaving no trace at all and taking none of their belongings with them. I remember it was a long hike to the old place up an old dried out riverbed. Anyway, that was a strange experience for a young boy. Bob.

When I was younger, I found the bowl of an old white clay pipe and a glass laundry bluing bottle. I was just hiking around in the woods looking for snakes to take pictures of, and stumbled onto a strange looking area near a pond. It was strange because it looked like there was a hillside that was carved out by something. So I just started poking around in the hillside, which was about 2-3 feet down from ground level. I found this pipe buried in the dirt and was pretty surprised. The bottle was found in a clay pit nearby. After visiting the county historical society, I learned that the site was an old iron works, situated near an abandoned rail road track. Nowdays, the tracks are gone and replaced with a really nice biking/running/recreational trail. I still have the pipe and bottle.
