There is a Cabela's at 5225 Prairie Stone Pkwy. Hoffman Estates, IL 60192

Can you order online if you have it shipped to the store (usually free!)
If there is a closer Cabela's I didn't find it. It would then be an in-store purchase. I would order several days in a row if available and then make one pickup.

You might have to order over the phone and have it shipped to the store.

You could also have it Shipped to a FedEx facility in Indiana and pick it up when it arrives. It's safe shipping since it stays on premises and it's in a state that doesn't regulate their ammo sales like your state. At one time, I had hard currency shipped (quite a few times) and this was the recommended way since you have to sign for the retrieval. The key, is to get there within a couple days of arrival or they will send it back (after 5 days).

I was off today so took a ride to cabelas in Indiana not a wide selection of .22 lr but had a 1200 round limit instead of one box so that was good 8.99 for 50 rounds

Look at the other big box stores. Most have the same policy as Cabela's. Do not know the specific laws in your state but can you buy online and have it shipped to the appropriate store(ammo dealer) in your area?
What is the law on importing? Can you make a road trip to a nearby friendly state and bring some back?

MattKG,
I feel your pain brother. I live in McHenry County (60 miles NW of Chicago) and we have numerous gun shops and large retailers (even Walmart sells guns and ammo) that carry what you are looking for. Out here however, it is near impossible (but getting better) to find .22LR

Question: I thought guns were banned in Chicago. How do you have a .22?

This is a serious question, not trying to be a smart donkey...

If you are able, I would just move to a freer area. Problem solved. Chicago and the entire state of Ilinois suck.

I don't believe they are banned. I believe they are heavily regulated through registration.

Here is what Wiki says Illinois Gun Laws

Also live in McHenry County in the People's Republik of Illinois. As mentioned, most Walmart stores carry ammo. Also, Gander Mountain usually has a nice selection.

Chicago (and all of Illinois for that matter) gun ownership is highly regulated with strict laws. As a result was have almost no gun violence/deaths. (Sarcasm!)

The gander mountain in Peoria (about 2 hours south of you) usually has 325 rn bulk pack of 22 and most other ammo in stock. I ordered some online with instore pick up only to discover when I got there the that there was huge display sitting in the isle with what I had ordered. If you're a hunter, they have a nice sale/bulk shotgun ammo too. If you're in that area, there is a store a little south of there called Presley's Outdoor that has a good selection of just about everything and usually a good stock. http://www.presleysoutdoors.com/

Hope that helps
