![]() Burp the tank. Once the pump shuts off, I rock the car to help trapped air escape and slowly add more fuel.

![]() Google "overfilling the gas tank". Not good, damages the vapor recovery system.
I had to replace the charcoal canister on my car, costs $300! |

![]() It’s sad that a non-thing like the vapor recovery system can tell you your car isn’t working right.
AFAIK, there’s nothing that will malfunction or hurt the car, it’s mileage or power if the vapor recovery system isn’t working, unless they program the system to do so. And they might have done so, depending on the car. Meanwhile, my old GMC Envoy has a jerking 2nd gear shift that GMC cannot and did not permanently fix. Totally about the electronics, as a control module swap fixes it temporarily. ![]() |

![]() All I know is that it is super annoying when someone keeps clicking their fuel fill nozzle and it keeps shutting off and producing a hydraulic hammer on the entire filling station each time.
Like some sort of OCD disease. If you need a bigger gas tank or spare reserve tanks, go and buy them. Sheesh! Do you think that extra 4 ozs of gas is going to make a difference in your motoring experience? |

![]() But that 1 cup of gas will cost me 3 cents more next weekend when I fill up again!

![]() On Ford diesels (possibly gassers as well) you can do the "Harpoon Mod" which gets you several gallons more before the nozzle will kick off.
After doing it I can only get 2 more gallons in my tank after nozzle kicks, which gets me full to filler opening lip. Diesels don't need to worry about fuel expansion as much as gassers but even so I only fill this full when I am going to be driving a while after I fill up. |

![]() What exactly is the purpose of this? How much more are you going to get in there, a quart more?
If you just really must get more gas go buy a five gallon tank and put your extra gas in that. You can top off your tank whenever you feel like it. This is just common sense. |

![]() If you are experiencing the pump shutting off prematurely..... it’s possible that you have a problem with the EVAP vent system....
it’s not healthy to try and squeeze more gas into the tank. Need to allow room for expansion If you are afraid of running out of gas.....buy a spare container |

![]() One station I use has a pump that the parking slopes away from. I think using that pump tends to trap less air in the tank as it fills.
I normally only run the pump up to one of my specific $$ numbers after it clicks since a glance through the monthly statement can tell me what it was and that I did it since it’s my number. SD |

![]() If a diesel you should also watch out for the pumps that are high flow as they can produce a lot of foaming. Which can cause the pump to click off WAY before the tank is actually full.

![]() When the automatic shut-off stops it, don't put anymore in there. By continuing to add fuel, you're just going to over-flow it into the evaporation canister. By design, it's for fuel vapor only. So by putting raw fuel in there, you are reducing the life of it and potentially causing engine damage. They can get pretty pricey and honestly, does that extra 15-20 cents in gas matter in the grander scope of things?
The baffles inside the tank are designed to prevent sloshing and foaming. |
