You survived an armed home intrusion. dang. Hoping you heal up fast. On a side note, I'd bet the farm those "fast competent paramedics...." and others have been added to BB's Santa list.

I'm so sorry that happened to you but so glad you survived and are on the mend!
I've had people look at me a little sideways when I've told them I am either carrying or always have weapons within reach inside my home. This strengthens my resolve. Several years ago there was a home invasion 2 miles from my house. Perps crashed their car in their escape 1 mile from my house and then ran on foot into our neighborhood. 5 armed guys running from the police. Shots fired. That could easily have become a hostage situation. Most of us didn't know what was going on until the next day. It made me glad i was carrying even though I was unaware of the situation at the time.
Add me to the list of those who would be glad to assist on sentry duty if needed. Regardless of the miles to travel.
I wish a speedy recovery to you!

Me too...because 100% of home invasions happen in the home. The math just adds up!

WOW! SO sorry to hear that you were shot by home invaders, BB! Hopefully the perps are in no condition to continue in their nefarious ways. Once you've recovered sufficiently, we would all be interested in hearing what went down. Will keep you and your recovery in prayer.

Spent this weekend on a jackhammer removing all the concrete steps/patio that was poured up against the house. Not sure why builders think it’s ok to pour over existing siding. Since I will be residing the house I wanted a clean slate. Took a lot of work and my arms are still shaking but it got chopped up. It’ll take a while to get it loaded in the trailer and dumped in the backyard (as fill from where the shooting berm was made) so I’ll tackle that as I have time. Half tempted to see if my friends kids want to make some Christmas money and come clean it up.

Once I was done with the jackhammer and the wife was returning it to HD rental, I got to start building the temporary front steps. At first it was going to simply be stairs but I decided to use some of the old decks wood and build it to a similar size to the deck I will be building (and permitting) after the siding and roof is done. I’m glad I did because I caught one design aspect that wouldn’t have worked. I built it to high. I’ll need the deck itself to sit essentially one step lower and then build a raised platform near the door. If I built it as is, the roof extension would be too low and it would look weird. Didn’t get nearly finished as dark descended on me and I called it quits for the night.

We live a bit secluded through the forest and over a creek and up the hill … and have layers of different fencing for different purposes so I don't have a lot of wildlife up by the inner perimeter anymore but did hear a cougar chirp for the first time ever this week off of the outer perimeter. Late last night my dog alerted rather quietly and looking intently out the back sliding glass doors . She has taught me to always respond , 50 percent of the time it won't be anything I even recognize but I trust it was always something . Well with Bunkbusters home invasion , I have that on my mind and never turned on any lights feeling I have an advantage . Well gazing carefully I saw a black figure and sure enough my black stallion had broken out and was grazing out on the house lawn . No biggie but it gave me a drill dealing with an unknown night event and made me think . While out there I had left the exterior lights off , and I think everything is far more imposing for a trespasser in the dark than if they can see around the perimeter of the house . I have some solar path lights but most are markers by stairs or other points of reference and not enough light, though I am experimenting with motion sensor lights both wired in and solar charged .

I am hoping if Bunkerbuster cannot recant his experience for legal reasons, perhaps he will school us with what worked in his favour and what he felt would have helped further ? I am talking lighting here today , but defensive device carry and placement , phones , sensors, dogs, practiced positions if you are suspecting someone at the door or on your inner yard casing or attempting to break in . Any wisdom you have prethought out or gleaned from this experience ? DO you think a person needs a differing plan for day and night ( besides whether caught inside or outside ) ?

I am convinced for my safety , my headlamps work well for much of what I do at night out with my animals , exterior lighting on the home are nice looking and make the outdoors areas around the home quite usable. I feel turning them on if I am inside makes it possible to see but leaving them on all night just allows anyone else to see just as well . The motion sensing ones have that element of unexpected surprise and come on super bright I think would put a stranger on the defensive , they light up the yards inner and second perimeter , almost illuminating enough to see the third perimeter . I definitely need to work on my cameras, sensors, and add some more sensor lights . I am going to test the bright ones tonight and walk around seeing if there are places I can stand where a trespasser would be blinded to where I am and places a person could see me better . There are times people come and go at all hours here around erratic work hours and other times work takes everyone else away . Always an intimidating number of vehicles parked here which could be a temptation but with only one way out once you drive in, I think it does not give the impression of making good victims and there are things meant to be seen and other things meant not to be seen but alert us both in the buildings and out around the yard that someone has entered the driveway down in the forest etc. I am always adding layers but slowly and hopefully thoughtfully .

It does bring up an interesting “issue”, if it can be called that. What a shame it is when we make acquaintances with people in the world of the inter webs and then loose track of them when something happens. It’s one thing if someone leaves on their own accord or get banned etc. there is usually a way to know. But when a good person has a real life major event and just disappears... we are left scratching our heads and hoping they eventually return. IIRC, this was hinted at in a different thread some time ago. And if I remember right, some suggested telling their families to pass the word if the person is no longer able to.
Hopefully BB is just recovering and tending to his business and will return whenever he is able.

Zip ties.

A huge bag of miscellaneous zip ties. Found them at a nearby thrift store, must be 200+ in the bag. Paid $2.00 for it.

I am thinking it is part and parcel of the anonymity of a forum is when NY Min or Revision and others stop posting , they simply stop posting .

But I was thinking could a profile be made from posts to work against you in a court , or by your government ? My thought is yes .

Second thought is people can be victimized selectively from information online . One prepper in BC was mentioning a large stash of gold on another forum I believe and thusly was relieved of it in a robbery which made headlines .

Significant reasons to be wary online , amoung others .

It’s definitely a conundrum. OPSEC is a big, often overlooked aspect of one’s survival efforts and should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately, while we may make “friends” online... one never really knows. And in today’s society it is foolish to reveal too much as it has a high probability of coming back to bite us.
As for the government’s likelihood of doing it... doesn’t even need to be questioned.
