Default Hello from SW Florida

Advertise Here

I've only recently started taking prepping seriously and I'm still really trying to figure out where to start but I do have three days of food and water, as well as pet food. That's mostly because I live in hurricane country, though.

I'm looking forward to talking with like minded people since my daughter (also my roommate) isn't much interested and thinks I'm a bit loony.

Welcome, the only Loony people are those who wait until the last minute and run to the store only to find the shelves empty.

You're exactly right. I think a lot of it has to do with she works a lot and knows I have the time to take care of it. Unfortunately, in our current home we don't have the space so it's slow going. We'll be buying a house in about a year and then I'll have the room to plant a garden, and room to store things.

Welcome from Indiana. Your daughter won't think your looney after the next major storm and you don't have to venture out into angry people who aren't prepared to get water and food.

I'm in the Cape.

She'll be at work so I'd be the only one suffering but point taken. Hell, I could just turn off the internet on her day off and that'd be enough for her.

We're already prepared with three days of food and water, batteries for the flashlights and lanterns, charcoal, etc for just that exact reason. The only thing I ever have to do is go pick up gas for the generator but I do that at the beginning of storm season before any storms are on the way. When we don't use it I put it in the cars.

Welcome to the board.

Gotta say, bump those numbers up a bit. 3 days just pushes the problems off. I'm in N. FL. Last few storms have been without power for four days. Irma, gasoline was hard to find for a week or more. As SoFla evacuees cleaned us out before the storm. Then the trucks hard a hard time getting into us and filling the stations up that had power to pump it back out.

Freeze dried foods are easy to store and prepare. Not too hard to have a few weeks of them on hand. When I lived in SoFla, everyone talked about Wilma. I wasn't there, but always heard things were messed up for three weeks.

This is a great place with loads of useful information. Just sometimes you have to hunt for it or filter out some of the noise. -K

Welcome from Texas.

I, too, am in hurricane country. Interestingly, the last time FEMA addressed this area (a few years ago), they upped their suggested number of prepared days from 3 days to 10 days. Did they do the same for Florida?

I'm working my way up to getting more. It's slow going because I'm on a fixed income but I'm budgeting a little each grocery trip.

I was here during Irma (well, I evacuated and came back) so I'm well aware of the problems during storms. I was lucky in that my area wasn't affected too badly, but just a few miles away they had the National Guard giving out water and MREs. I evacuated because we were expected to get a high storm surge and since I live on a canal that would have been deadly.

I always stock up on gas at the beginning of storm season both for the generator and for the vehicles. The goal by the beginning of this storm season is to have a solid three weeks of food, water, and pet food. By the end of the year I want to have at least three months, but hopefully more.

I've also been checking CL for a food dehydrator and canning supplies so I can head down that path, too.
