I watched The Earthling when it came out. This is an excellent movie and is as interesting to kids as adults. I would not let younger kids see the part where the parents die. Other than that an excellent movie for the entire family. The gist of the movie is the older guy teaching the kid survival techniques so he will be able to take care of his self. I have not seen this movie in years so I can not say if the survival part is completely accurate but from what I remember it was. Certainly worth seeing at least once.

The Earthling 1980 (William Holden as Patrick Foley) (Ricky Schroeder as Shawn)

Patrick Foley has been on the move all his live. Tired of drifting, he wants to spend his last days in an isolated Australian valley where he grew up. On his difficult journey he meets Shawn, a little desperate city-boy whose parents were killed in an accident in this remote inhospitable territory. Being unable to accompany the boy back to the civilized world he reluctantly takes him with him on his trip to that valley and teaches him in a rugged way how to survive ... I for one, don't think of Red Dawn as a purely wilderness survival movie. More of a TEOTWAWKI war movie with some wilderness survival tossed in. But it has been years since I have seen it.

Red Dawn also has its own thread > https://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=11475

No kidding. If there was a bigger moron on the planet than him, I haven't heard of him, yet. That movie is a joke and an insult to Alaskans and survivalists everywhere.

They are remaking Red Dawn, supposedly with a Muslim extremist slant. No cast yet, but it has a screenwriter and director and funding.

Another good one is "Shoot to Kill" with Tom Berenger.

Watched a movie last night called Defiance, based on a book titled "Defiance the Bielski Partisans"

The true story of a group of jews who evaded the Nazi in world war ii by fleeing into the forest (wilderness) and living for 3 or 4 years. This is not a war, shoot em up. It is not really a how too survive movie either.

It does however, give a bit of understanding on the problems of organizing and dealing with a group of common people who have a will to survive.

The movie proves one point I have believed strongly. That point is to reconize danger and take action quickly, early, in any situation. It is proof that never letting your friends or loved ones discourage you from being prepared and reaction and planing early in any type of crisis situation, be it SHTF or an ecomomic situation.

Ps have ordered the book so will keep you posted. Usually the books are better than the movies.

The Last of the Dogmen is great. Not really about surviving, but I loved it. Rugged Gold is good too.

Can you give a short review as to what it is about and the best place to get it.

Well, I found the edge, had already seen it.

Two men, old one and young one. Young one works for older one. Young one has an affair with older man's wife.

They get stranded in the wilderness (old man and young man) and are stalked by a Grizzly bear.

Good movie. Have not seen the book yet.

For me...
"Alive!" - The Uruguayan Soccer Team plane crash in the Andes Mountains, Red Dawn (one of my favorites), and "Alone in the Wilderness."
