All the Dobermans I have up there waiting to chew on me are big enough for a small kid to ride for a minute or two.

That counts!

There is no definitive answer to the question in Orthodox theology, doctrine, or tradition. It would appear the same for the Catholics. Personally, I believe that as G-d's creations animals will go to heaven. There were animals in the Garden of Eden. Why wouldn't they be in heaven?

If animals go to heaven, as Sylvia Brown says they do, it makes the idea of eating meat seem wrong.

Thanks, Peter for posting that song. I haven’t thought of it in years. It brought back a lot of great memories.

Ecclesiastes 3:21

Quote:
Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
There is no theological reason to believe that there will be anyone in Heaven but God, his created Angels, and those creatures he created in His own image - mankind.

That doesn't mean it's impossible. There's just no reason to think necessarily they will be there.

I've often wondered if the love we give our pet changes that destiny for some beasts.

Regarding the idea that there are many mansions in heaven, I doubt my mansion would be prepared for me without my beloved pets.

These kinds of questions are fun to think about but don't really relate to anything important. Kinda like the questions "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" or "can God make a rock so heavy He can't pick it up". Both of those questions are foolish.

Do animals go to heaven. The Bible doesn't have anything on it. God gives us some Scripture to fall back on when we bring up these questions that don't seem to have an answer.
Quote:
Deu_29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
The Bible doesn't reveal to us everything about God or Creation. But we do have what it does reveal. My thoughts are before we try to find answers for these types of questions, we should first learn as much as we can about what God has reveled to us in His Word.

Personally I think the answer is there between the lines, along with the scripture I quoted, but in general I agree with the sense of what you say: from a theological standpoint it is not that important. But I can understand how someone who really loves their 20-year old horse hopes it goes to heaven. I'm just sorry that my answer is "probably not, but one never knows for sure".

Merlin, I agree with you. I think probably not. Animals were created from the land.
Quote:
Gen 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
Man was created much differently and with a living soul
Quote:
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

According to Genesis, on the fifth day God created the animals of the land, sea and air. Not only did He create all those animals, He saw that they were GOOD and BLESSED them. To my Orthodox thinking, a blessing from God Himself is the ultimate seal of approval.

Animals do not sin. They have no moral capacity for it. As one of our Latin colleagues correctly stated, mankind has a rational intellect, which animals lack. Therefore animals are blameless in the Fall of Man. Indeed it is Man’s rational mind which made him such an easy target for the enemy, leading him directly into sin and all the unpleasantness that follows - pain, illness, infirmity, death, etc...

The Cross was for the redemption of all creation from the effects of Man’s sin.

On the question posed in the OP: If one dies and wakes up, and there are no dogs around, he is not in heaven.

There has been some understandable interchange between pets and animals in this thread.

Last night I went for a twilight walk in the local park and was swarmed for 1/4 mile of the 4 mile walk by deer flies. Insects cannot be part of my heaven! Who ever needs to feed on them can eat nutritional supplement #21 (in Star Trek).
