My first was during the 70's. I got into a lot of American Indian, gaucho, cowboy, history stuff in the Boy Scouts. My first bolo (always heard and used the male word), was dried rabbit skin, wrapped around two round river rocks and then dipped into boiling water. The skin draws up tight and dries hard. Stretched deer skin works the same way. I've SEEN, but never used, rawhide. The thongs were braided leather, common three strand plait, rolled between the floor and a board til round. The traditional method was to roll it under your cowboy boot, flat sole, of course. Once round and skin dried fully in the sun, the entire thing was oiled and sun soaked again to absorb it all. I gave that to an assistant scoutmaster in our troop.

The same time frame, I made my first bow, arrows, sling, tomahawk, knife, leatherwork of all sorts.

Thank you. I've been toying with the idea of learning this skill. Now I have extra motivation with your link.

Excellent ones can be made with a trio of fishing sinkers (I usually use 3,4, ad 5 ounce) with paracord. These are pretty lethal on small to medium game with a neck strike.
