Tell that to Musk and his Starlink internet service.

As of January 2020, SpaceX has deployed 182 satellites. They plan to deploy 60 more per Falcon 9 launch, with launches as often as every two weeks after late 2019. In total, nearly 12,000 satellites will be deployed by the mid-2020s, with a possible later extension to 42,000.

So what are they supposed to be doing? Star Wars systems? Fighting aliens? The evil Russians?

The US has not had that independent capability for the last eight and a half years.

This is all the more surprising when it is accepted by most in the West that the US "won" the space race against those very same Russians.......

I get that not every strategy to do with space requires manned missions/vehicles - but both China and Russia seem able to hang onto (and indeed expand) that capability.

The divergence between reality and the US government seems to widen on an almost daily basis.

It also makes one wonder within what other areas of capability the US has fallen behind........
Wars are barely fought by humans anymore.

The US may not have the ability yet, but Russia and China do not have anything that can hold a candle to why SpaceX and Virgin are going to be doing in less than a decade. Just let them get it totally fine tuned and we are looking at a massive leap forward, and Russia and China will be standing still.

The US has always done better to let private interests move forward.

One only has to watch the rocket boosters make those precision landings on floating barges no less, to be convinced that Musk is the real deal.

The man has a vision and is carrying it out.
It represents the next steps of man leaving this planet and colonizing others.
I'm sure he hired some good help, and NASA is no doubt helping him, but
he is changing the world.

Cops in camo makes even less sense.

No more Navy "blueberries".

Only really the army, marines, and seals should wear camo, the other branches probably want to fit in, as they are largely pogs.

I agree about cops too, pretty sure they just want to appear militarized, which for civilians has the opposite intended effect - it feeds us "this is a police state" narratives and we are.

Plenty of Marines hide behind trees (we do have desert camies as well though) no matter what their MOS, as every Marine is a rifleman. I saw cooks, admin, supply, MT, etc all running patrols during my deployments.

Picking on the Space Force because NONE of their people will be hiding behind anything. Very few will ever even be seen in the light of day, from working inside buildings over computer screens.

I just saw that blueberries are going away, but the idiotic brass that okayed the replacement moved the rank insignia from the collar to the middle of the chest. It is a subdued insignia that is hard to see and now requires staring at a female squid's breasts to discern her rank.

The Navy needs to just go back to dungarees.

Since the 1960s, Space exploration and colonization has been hampered by government meddling.

From “Space Jockey” by Robert A. Heinlein (1947):
“... The traveling-public gripes at the lack of direct Earth-to-Moon service, but it takes three types of rocket ships and two space-station changes to make a fiddling quarter-million-mile jump for a good reason: Money.”
  1. Earth’s space station : Supra-New York
  2. Luna’s space station : Space Terminal
  3. Earth to orbit and return : catapulted streamlined winged space craft
  4. Station to station : never landing shuttles, almost all cargo space
  5. Luna to orbit and return : ugly duckling pogo sticks
- - -
NASA’s “Moon shot” basically combined all five into one...
Earth to orbit (Saturn V boosters - discarded).
Orbit to orbit (Command / Service module, Lunar Excursion Module)
Orbit to Moon ( LEM) (Command / Service module remained in orbit)
Moon to Orbit (Ascent portion, Descent stage abandoned on surface)
Orbit to Orbit (Command / Service module) (Ascent stage abandoned)
Orbit to Earth (Command module abandoned / capsule landed)
- - -

Throw away 99% of each vessel and you'll never, ever accomplish anything except political talking points.
Ditto, ditto for the "trip to Mars." Boondoggle, fir shir.

Once they plan on building a lunar orbiting space station and a high earth orbit space station - both with 1 G centrifuges - then we might see some inexpensive space travel.
