The premise of American "greatness" isn't in when... but HOW you can live (and that "how" is the important part)... because even as a liberal you get to live (and think), have a great life, or a crappy one -> in FREEDOM.

Those who don't like it are even free to LEAVE... (other nations would prevent this)

There is not ONE SINGLE OTHER NATION ON EARTH that enjoys this simple premise. NONE. The construct of personal sovereignty and liberty is the basis for this great experiment. The fact that we've not served that premise well is our own fault. But it exists nonetheless.

Start appreciating what a gift you have been given and please STOP conflating American "greatness" with some period of time.

It's disingenuous.

It's pretty great now, and it's had greatness in the past.

Liberals are so braindead and think Trump is saying to make it "perfect" again.

No. Obviously, he is wanting to make our economy booming, improve human relations, improve national pride, etc.

So in that obvious vein, let me answer the OP's question.

* The USA pulled together with the world to held end WWI and defeat the Germans.
* The USA helped defeat Nazism and Totalitarianism in just a few years.
* Americans pulled together to put a man on the moon, which is still pretty freaking amazing especially with the rudimentary technology of the era.
* Americans FOUGHT countrymen to end slavery and oppression in the Civil War.
* Americans stood together to end discrimination of minorities and women.
* We defeated Communism and Socialism across the globe, notably in the Cold War.

And so forth.

Contrast that against today:
* We struggle to solve simple problems and defeat evil ideologies and rudimentary enemies.
* Much of our population is plain crazy and insane, welcoming Communism/Socialism, gender confusion, weak people, homelessness, drug epidemic, and so forth
* We had a poor manufacturing base when Clinton, Bush, and Obama gutted our industries.

And so forth.

Now, we can nitpick our history and say we were bad here and there. But the idea is for the nation to pull together and pool resources to return to our greatness in manufacturing, equity, strength, sanity, humanity, problem solving, etc.

+1 @ Steverino.. and America was certainly Greater, before all the Demonrat Zommunists and their MSM-drunk 'Libbings' (Liberal Lemmings..) have been trying to make "...If at first you don't succeed.... Move the goal posts..." (or, 'Lower your Standards'... or Both..) the 'new National Anthem' in this Country....

..Instead of working shoulder-to-shoulder with their Fellow Neighbors, they want to Dilute what strengths everyone Has, with 'Moar Diversiteeeeee' and instead of working harder to Make things better (..ie: ya know, actually 'Be the Change' you want to see, etc..) they clamor for us all to 'Come on down! Come wallow with us in our amoral pigpens, free drag queen storytime for All the pre-pubescent kids we're grooming in Evolution-class, then it's off to Drugohol hour and sodom & gomorrah-nite at the local Spin 'n Puke! But don't worry, UBI and free STD-tests, the .Gov will save us All, WooooHooo!!'....

..So, yeah, Idaho.. At least appreciate that you're still Free to be ungrateful and history-blind on a public forum.

But there were fewer than 30 years when America was not at war somewhere and wars cause a lot of misery for a lot of people.
So youíve had 10 years you consider America to have been great? And the thing you measure by is how YOU felt about it?

Interesting. And you had silly crap to pull up about other peopleís ideas?
Okay.
So hereís the same treatment, for you.

1955. The Warsaw Pact is formed

1956. Stalin puts down the uprising in Hungary, the US does nothing.

1957. The soviets launch Sputnik, and Viet Nam starts. We send advisers.

1958. Cuban revolution begins...communists right off our shore. Iraq goes commie as well. The US does almost nothing.

1959. First US casualties in Viet Nam. The Soviets reach the moon with an unmanned shot.

1960. The U2 is shot down over Russia, and the Pill makes unprotected sex easy.
And you got married when, again?

1961 the Bay of Pigs debacle. The Berlin Wall goes up. Russians put the first men in space.

1966. Mao begins the purges called the Cultural Revolution, the Sovietís hit the moon again, and the VietNam war is more real than ever, 6,350 Americans die there.

1967. 11,363 more die in Vietnam in this year, and Muhammad Ali refuses to obey the law by being drafted, citing his Muslim faith. He is sentenced to 5 years, fined $10,000, and banned from boxing, but heís allowed to be free as he appeals it, and runs to Canada, and then comes back, serves NO time, and gets reinstated to boxing by politicians in New York.

1968. My Lai, almost 17,000 dead in VietNam this year, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King are killed.

1969 the Concord starts flying making record amounts of pollution every flight, Altamont concert happens, and Arpanet begins our decline into the the present state of illiteracy and foolishness.

So yeah....your answers are just as bad as the ones you criticized.

If you take it beyond just a campaign slogan, I would say the statement "Make America Great Again" is not necessarily a certain date in the past, or period, generation, or decade from the past.

America's greatness has grown and has changed since colonial times. The USA's greatness is the culmination of many things.

If you're analyzing the slogan, Libtards have a hard time understanding that, even though it's a fairly simple concept. Red hats also trigger them, so there's not much else to say about that.

When the great messiah proclaimed "hope and change"..what exactly was he referring to?

Hope..was there not hope? did we all lose our hope?

Change..change to what? what was so wrong that needed change?

I'm not replying to the troll per se , but the idea of the post in general.

We were always great despite our warts, pimples and struggles. A difference up until recent years is that we could be proud of our country and its accomplishments while we worked to change the things that needed changing. We have always been and always will be a work in progress.

For me personally, 1976 is my favorite year ever. I was 14. It was overall a tough decade socially and economically and my family felt all of it. My parents divorced in '73 and we went from solid middle class to struggling with genuine poverty pretty much overnight. Everything was changing everywhere. Broken families, drugs, war, societal norms being tested to breaking. We struggled, as people always have, but we got through it. We loved each other. I knew both my parents loved me even if they couldn't love eachother. We all worked and did our part to help the family. We made it work. Like always.

The biggest thing was we could all be proud to be Americans and celebrate all that that entails. It was our Bicentennial. 200 years of the best country to ever exist in history.

I marched in the Bicentenial Parade in Philadelphia on Independence Day. I watched and was proud to learn all the bits of our history from the snippets of, "And You Were There" on television. I visited the wagon trains from all over the country that converged on Valley Forge. I climbed on and inside the Liberty Bell because it was still in Independence Hall and didn't have to be locked away from those who would defile it.

I could walk down the road with a shotgun or rifle, even into town to buy ammo at Western Auto on the way to plinking at a farm dump and no one called the SWAT Team. Hell, we didn't even have a SWAT Team. Cops carried .38 revolvers and that seemed to suffice.

It was a great time to be alive. I was thankful that despite some hardship I could still have the things I needed and most of the things I wanted if I was willing to work for it.

But most of all, I was so, so proud to be an American!
I still am and I carry that with me every day. I still tear up during the National Anthem. I'm still proud despite the hard times and economic and social strife. I refuse to allow our detractors to try to shame me for the pride I have in my country. I will never allow them to take that from me and I know that there are enough people of like mind out there to ensure they never do. We have been great. We are great. We have much yet to do and We will continue this greatest experiment ever and nothing will stand in Our way.
.
.
.
Can someone pass me a stool so I can get off this soap box, please.
Thank you.

I agree, but I think times like that and times like 2008-2016 show how strong this country is.
A globalist/communist like obama can hammer this country for 8 years and itís still standing strong. Hell, itís not even on the ropes. It can be if we arenít careful with the election process but even after 8 years of neglect and outright abuse thereís still no country even close

Being at war, or no war has nothing to do with a country's greatness. NOTHING! Our country has only been around a few hundred years and we are the richest and mightiest and technology advanced country there is. We have free speech, own guns, etc. We have a constitution which guarantees rights, free to practice religion, etc. That is what makes us a great country, and that is what liberals like you are trying to take away.

America was greatest when you were a child in your parents care and you were playing with your friends in a mostly free world. I do not know any other "better times" period that you can honestly remember.

We have hot water, air conditioning, fancy cars, modern appliances, fancy restrooms, nice houses and an endless supply of toilet paper!

When was the last time you went without food?

When was the last time you had a hamburger, pizza, fried chicken, steak and endless buffets of Chinese food?

If we got rid of politics, politicians and social media, life could be even better!
Exactly! The two years I spent overseas in my mid 20's was an eye opener and most of the places you mention I've been to, even Africa. To many Americans really don't have a perspective or understanding of what blessings they really have in America. I remember when I got back I had such distain for so many here because of there pettiness and lack of understanding of what the world really is and how well we have it. It's also the reason I have so little patience for the gimmie dats crowd..

You could have been born in a **** hole country plagued with malaria, where you had to eat rats and grass just to live.

You could have been born in a religious theocracy where they killed you for being gay or raped you for not wanting to marry the wrong man.

You could have born in an Asian sweat shop to a prostitute with syphilis so you can earn 5 cents a day.

But no you choose to bitch about america, the fact that you can bitch and not be killed for it is your testament.

From the end of WW II until 1973. When our economy was doing great. And by "great" I mean good solid middle-class jobs that supported a comfortable and prosperous middle class. And not the so-called "great" economy of today. Where the only beneficiaries are corporate CEO's and Wall Street hedge fund managers and a tiny sliver 1%.

I was born in 1952. I'd say America was great until the early 60s. I had a great childhood. Money was tight, but my parents kept us fed and clothed. We had a lot of freedom as free range kids.

The 60's were not really all that bad, and that's when I started learning how to work. The early 70s sucked because just as I entered the work force, things were slow and the pay for many jobs wasn't great. Four years in the military did isolate me from that a bit. When I separated from the service, I did manage to find a decent job even though the job market was crappy.

The 80's were good enough. I had a great job. Then I went back to college and those years were nice enough. After a couple years in the early 90's when I worked crappy jobs, I managed to get a good one. I had that for 2 yrs when it went away, but got an even better job. So that took care of me for another 20 years. I also did the ARNG thing for 22 years so that helped. Now I'm retired and life is good overall.

So was America ever really "great"? It was for some of us; maybe not for others. But I never stopped working and made a good life. So for me, regardless of the economics of any particular time, I managed to keep doing better. I am firmly in the "America is Great" corner. Never asked for hand-outs, never took an entitlement payout. I simply worked for the life I have. There are many countries where that would not be enough; America allows us to do as much as we can.

World war II. Starting out with a destroyed Pacific fleet we got into a war to determine whether two totalitarian regimes would be allowed to rule the entire world. Though other countries did all they could to save themselves and help others, and really did do brave and respectable things, it would have all gone to nothing without America throwing more than a million men and our nation's resources into it.

We fought two wars at the same time (Pacific theatre and European) thousands of miles away from the supply sources, and won. That, and the people who got it done were great. Now we can't win wars against tiny nearly primitive countries that are smaller than most of our individual states because we're too interested in being politically correct to our enemies.

We can. Our politicians canít...which is just another example of how they arenít representing us.

I like the rest of your post...as bad as Roosevelt was in certain ways, he did lead well in getting all of that to work together, and it is awe inspiring.
