I understand that the books have been through a purge to clean up Jim's name but Injun Joe remains, is that discrimination? Meanwhile as monuments in the south are being defaced and removed due to protests the statue of Mark Twain in Elmira, NY hasn't gotten any attention. Is this because it's in the north rather than the south??

Injun Joe will be amended to Indian Joe for childrenís editions. This was back in 2011 are you catching up after a spell inside or are a Snow White from the alternative ending where the Prince and the 7 persons of diminished stature were unable to intervene for 8 years.

Well they were written in the 1880s, what's your point?

Would Negro Jim be acceptable, or maybe African-American Jim?

My point is that you can't rewrite history. What's next removing the word Jap from WWII books? Monuments in the south are are being sacrificed to political correctness. Even though the south and part of the north was wrong on slavery the history should stand to remind us of the past.

Seems this wasn't as much of a problem back when books were stone tablets.

You can not ban, burn or imprison an idea.

Who knows man I donít have much of an opinion on the matter. Just pointing out a pertinent fact.

I'm not a racist and Huck Finn was a satire exposing racism though I am not sure that was Twain's intent. I think the purge and monument issue demonstrate a reluctance in speaking truth about our attitudes (past and present) toward race.

I need to buy some copies of the originals to preserve for posterity. Changing the words of a master author like Mark Twain is a travesty and a shame. Twain's writings reflected the actual language of the times and shouldn't be tainted by the brain-dead social justice doofuses.

Humans have a tendency to inject emotions and personal experiences into the conversation. This will always lead to a distorted view on the truth.

Twain was a product of his time, whether intentional or not. The book serves as a good measure of look how far we've come.

20 years from now, the youth will be searching out the original publishings, and maybe they will have a better understanding.

Lol, yup without Jim, the story wouldn't be as interesting. I wonder what Jim would think of all this justice for him today?

IMO a part of history has already been lost. The N-word did not originate as a slur it was the attempt of uneducated people to pronounce Negro. I knew a teacher with a master's degree from Duke that kept saying Negra even with me coaching her to say Negro, Now Negro is unacceptable.

I was in the 82nd Abn and we had a lot of Mexicans and blacks seeking that extra $50 per month "jump pay" as I was. That extra pay was a big boost to my $122.30 E-4 base pay. You should have heard the slurs tossed back and forth in barracks banter. BTW English was the only language permitted in the Army, no Spanish in those days.

People in 16 and 1700,s England spoke varied dialects. The two most common were kings english, spoken by noblemen and Elizabethan english spoken by commoners. The early settlers of this country were mostly lower class englishmen. In Elizebethan english words are pronounced much differently than kings. Swallow is pronounced swaller, hollow, holler, and negro,[ n word.]. It was not a made up word to degrade anyone though people that were being kept as slaves were gonna resent any thing they were being called by their keepers.

`

I remember as a kid watching "Blazing Saddles" on T.V. (network) and they cut out all the farting sounds but left in all the pejoratives. Then I caught it many years later on a cable channel & the fart sounds were in & all the "N-word" pejoratives were taken out, but all the other ones were OK. I also saw "Sixteen Candles" on one of the movie channels (you know the ones that show soft core porn & other spicy shows) & they had edited out several of the Asian jokes, most being VERY tame. It's funny how things change over the years. Who knows one day it may even be considered offensive to call white people all the pejoratives they are currently called with no fuss being raised at all.

I caught my eye on this post.
Mark Twain is one of my favorite authors since childhood.
This year, the so-called "Tom Sawyer Fest" is popular in Russia, when volunteers restore old wooden houses for free.
