"Firearms collections events began in July, and additional events are scheduled through the coming months. By Sunday, 10,242 firearms had been handed into police, according to a New Zealand police spokesperson. Another 1,269 had been handed in under amnesty."

What's interesting is that many were merely unwanted.

Being able to sell to law enforcement, knowing the weapons will be destroyed would give people a little money in their pockets in addition to some peace of mind that they won't be unloading a weapon onto some random pawn shop broker or someone who could sell it to a person who could go on to commit crimes.

10,242 firearms though... I wonder if buy backs/amnesty were offered regularly in the US and advertised widely, how many would be obtained year to year... Especially since New Zealand has a population of 4.8 million, and the US is, you know, like 328 million.

California (population 40 million) has buybacks on a regular basis all across the state, you might want to do a search on those figures... it might depress you.

I didn't know that, looking into it briefly, it looks as if it was offered Sate-Wide once, by an anonymous donor that paid for over 600 firearms after Sandy Hook.

Los Angeles seems to have a buy back program, city specific, that has netted 15,233 Guns Bought Back, so that seems pretty good. How do you classify depressing?

"In 2017, Mayor Garcetti set a goal to remove at least 20,000 guns from the streets of L.A. in five years — and we’re on the fast-track to meet that goal, with 7,300 guns collected last year alone..."
https://grydfoundation.org/other-com...s-gun-buyback/

And I didn't even know those were offered by authorities, imagine if they advertised more.

Nobody can say for sure how many guns are in California but some estimates claim 8 million people own one or more firearms, so the buyback figures are a drop in the ocean.

That would be depressing to an anti-gun person, I assume you fit this bill. If I am wrong, I apologize.

Those were presumably unwanted weapons in people's homes. Weapons that did not end up in some gang, or some mass shooting, 15 thousand weapons that were not needed and properly disposed of, that presumably, without such a buy back, would have remained unnecessarily in circulation. Why would any one have a problem with the removal of those weapons? No one was forcing anyone to do anything.

I'm not an "anti-gun person." If you feel you must see me as anything you can classify me as a person who would like to see fewer fatal accidents, fewer murders and less effective criminals, in general.

Fair enough Roger... my point is that gun buybacks are not really that successful, in the grand scheme of things.

If you wish to spend your own money in a vain attempt to keep a gang member from having a gun go for it. Just make sure that each unwanted gun you buy and destroy is properly handled. I am unwilling to contribute a nickle of my tax money into such feel good but useless gestures.

You do realize how utterly foolish your notion that these gun buy back stunts do anything to stop gang or mass shooting violence? I am frankly amazed that you could type such without laughing out loud at the naivety of it.

The article also says he wants a registry to "tamp down WHITE NATIONALISM".

What the blue **** is that?? I was a WP Skinhead in the 1980's. I have since changed my views(somewhat, anyway), but I can tell you, any white nationalism is pretty much gone. Mean to say, I am still a Nationalist, but I have no idea what the hell this moron is on about...

The left seems to be labeling any Caucasian Trump voter as a "White Nationalist"

I hope I'm wrong but this looks like the narrative they are pushing.

I believe you are correct.

They wore out the term racist and replaced it with white nationalist.

The key word in his buy back scheme is.....MANDATORY for weapons of war. Thank God I don't have any.

One of our nearby towns used to do "buy backs".

A friend of mine who was a gunsmith would sell them guns he was unable to repair, and would spend the money to buy better guns to sell.

It was a great way to clean out his junk drawer of scrap metal.

A lot do that, but they are starting to disallow them...Serbu has made a GB22..stands for Gun Buyback .22
Fully functional 22 handgun that can be made by anyone easily.
He even sells plans for them for $12....this would be nice to put away for future generations

Quote:
DETAILS
With only a barrel, frame, slide and recoil spring, the GB-22 can be made at home with steel plate and bar stock by use of a hacksaw, file and drill. Attaching the barrel to the frame can be done via welding, roll pins, or screws. The roll pin method is detailed in the plans, though the user can easily adapt them to welding. The concept is to be able to make a simple, working gun for whatever reason you want– though he stresses that you could sell these at gun buybacks for a profit.

Of course his example is a little tricked out with an optic and some custom grips, and he makes the prototype on CAD/CAM-controlled CNC machines because it's easy to do and he has access to them. He stresses you can craft virtually the same with hand tools; it just takes more sweat equity.

If you don’t want to buy a spring he even shows you how to make your own out of music wire!
