I stopped using electrical tape when it got too firm. The old stuff would stretch really well and allow you to have a good seal.
I use and stock multiple varieties of all 3. Kind of like saying "Why use a rifle or handgun when you have a shotgun" Each has different applications that it is better than the others. For example, could you tell me how you could use liquid electrical tape to secure loose wires to a fish tape to pull thru a conduit? Sure - you can use heat-shrink, but it would be expensive and troublesome in that example.

It's seems to be high temperature related. I have thrown away so many rolls in the last few years. I don't even keep it in the truck. I only keep easy rap and vm tape.

Where I buy tape is important. I typically pick up tape from quality MRO outlets like Grainger, Johnson Supply, etc.

If I order for MRO mail delivery I typically want a specialist outfit.

These guys do nothing but pro tape.

Amazon marketplace where sellers sell under amazon website is bigger than the amazon retail division.
They will start a donate program next month to non profits and charities of unsold merchandise from third parties that before was destroyed. This is a lot of stuff, in france where they destroyed a lot there was 3-4 million tv sets alone.

As others have said, age and high temps will do that. Iíve got 20 year old 2Ē rolls of Scotch 88 and a few colors of 35 n my basement, and itís as good as new. But a roll of 33 wonít last a summer on my dash. Neither will Nasuha military grade duct tape.

Not a problem when installed.

Anyone who thinks heat shrink and liquid electrical tape replace tape, isnít used to doing much critical work. 3:1 adhesive lined heat shrink is very useful, but itís got limitations, is stiff, not easily removed, and expensive. Other types wonít stop moisture intrusion, or handle diameter changes. And even 3:1 is useless for insulating say a split bolt or H Tap. I donít use liquid electrical tape except as a coating for electrical tape exposed to the elements.

You ought to try a 4kv splice, where we use 4 different 3m tape products- plus scotchkote. Iíll leave that to our techs- itís been a while.

About 1 year ago I wanted some #11 scalpel blades. I wanted Feather blades from Japan as they are the top of the line. There were several Feather blades on the Amazon web site and I purchased some that were $5 cheaper. When I got them they were not feather blades. I dug around and the originator was selling no name China? blades for something like $7 per 100. I had paid $25 for the "feather" ones. I searched around for a phone number for Amazon and finally googled them to find one and called. They said they would research it and get back to me. 2 days later I got an email saying My card was being rebated and I could keep the blades. I went back to Amazon and found some Feathers actually sold by amazon for $35 and those were the real deal and just as good as I remembered.
