Default New here from Iowa

Advertise Here

My family moved from the east coast, and while I've always wanted to homestead, I've recently gotten my wife interested in it as well.

We have 4 young kids, and hopefully we can start homeschooling them next year.

Our home on the east coast is just about sold now, so we should have money to put down on land very soon. Looking forward to learning from the experiences here

Thanks everyone. We are in the Des Moines area right now, but we are looking for land within an hour or so of the city.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Depends on what your wants are. If you wish to homestead as it were your options are very limited that close.

Basically looking for 5-10 acres that we can grow our food and raise a few animals on. I'd hate to have to go all of the way up to fort Dodge for that.

I would look southward. Going north you run into the Ames/Ankeny corridor and the bid-up prices. Any town with a meat packing plant is going to have a very heavy Hispanic presence along with the gangs they have been bringing for decades now (Perry, Marshalltown, Ottumwa, etc).

Basically look in an arc from Des Moines to Guthrie Center and swing through the south. You'll find Greenfield, Creston, down to Van Wert (south of Osceola), Chariton, and not quite Albia within that arc. Those would be the lower priced, lower populated, more conservative/less urbanized areas where you might find what you seek.

Winterset (Madison County) falls in that arc but still suffers from Bridges of Madison County/John Wayne birthplace attraction and the resultant price inflation and high taxes.

Meanwhile, enjoy the State Fair this week. Hoping to hit that on Friday ourselves.
