Default Garden with seeding weeds

Advertise Here

I an 75 with on and off health issues. I purchased $50 in seeds for this year plus all my seeds I have in stock. Non hybrids only. My garden is about 30 x 60 ft and I sprayed it in the spring to kill a huge weed crop. Killed weeds but have done nothing since then. I now have a garden full of weed plants all with mature seed heads. If I mow or till I will plant mass weed seeds. I am feeling fairly good at this time and would like to plant some veges, like carrots and beets, for a fall garden. The question I have is what do I do with all the weed plants that are full of seed. Either mow or till they will be planted. How do I get a garden? Please help

maybe use a weed eater to knock them down then rake them up,and build a bonfire to destroy them in ,,,would be a good bit of work but would get most of the seeds that way ,,

I don't know what you can do because I don't know all the details. But
here is what I would do.

I would start my seeds indoors, because its hot here. While your waiting
for them to grow into seedlings, I would put the weeds into a compost pile.

At the age of 75, if you don't have farm equipment, and a lot of land, I would
start a container garden for many reasons. Its easier on your back for one.
It uses lass water and compost, and your yields are better for less land.

What you grow them in? What have you got?

Or start a raised bed Garden. There are plenty of examples on Youtube
people make them from wood, cinder blocks, Metal, or other things.

If you do this you can put the weeds in the bottom, and while your
initial investment in a good soil for the top may be high it will help
you in the long run.

I had 2 smaller plots with big time weeds this year since I planted a little late. I wait until it rains the day before so the soil will be loose and I pull the weeds the old fashioned way, on my hands and knees.

I get the bulk of them and then have it tilled or double dig it myself. Which I did this year, but a 30' x 60' plot is a tough dig at any age.

Till early and till often. I start tilling the garden about 2 months before spring planting. I till at least 3 times a few weeks apart. After the 3rd time the weeds are pretty much gone.

Maybe raised beds as mentioned, would help. My Scout troop made wheelchair accessible planter boxes (different than raised beds) for a place that works with disabled kids. Lots of pics out there and plans on how to make them.

If the weeds are dry you could burn them. That will kill the seeds. If still a bit green maybe throw some straw or hay over them and burn that.

Otherwise grab each plant and cut it off at the base. This will only work if they have grown big. Throw it to one side off of the garden.

If you can find a mower that throws to one side, run down the bed so the weeds/seeds get thrown to the side. Come back the other way so the weeds next to that strip get thrown the other way. Cut real low, right down to the dirt. You will now have a strip twice the width of the mower that will be relatively free of weed seeds. Do that a bit further over for another strip of clear ground. You will still have strips of weeds and weed cuttings between the mowed areas but 2/3 of the bed could be cleared for planting.

Here is a Channel to help you with a Raised Bed Garden. If you start it
now you will have far less weeds to pull because you can put the raised
beds over the weeds. Then weed the path way between them and throw
the weeds in the beds. Cover them with cardboard, mulch, or both, then
put your soil mixture in on top.

I have the same problem. I tilled and let sprout twice and three times in another spot. I have bad weeds. I used round up on the orchard and it did good work in places. One area I gave up, tilled half the weeds and used the weed eater again. Weeds are coming back up. I may just hit it with round up again.

I do this: Set mower as low as it will go and mow. Dig hole in the location, about two feet deep+ and rake the weed seeds and everything else into the hole. Two feet should keep the seeds from coming back for a while. Then cover with a black plastic over the garden area for at least three weeks to heat up and kill the weeds back. cut holes in the plastic to plant the vegetables. Leave enough room in the cut so as to water/fertilize the plant.

Old Disturbed guy, it depends on what state you live in. Where I live there are 2-3 months left in the summer, and I THINK that I could plant potatos and get a crop. And it is possible to plant Fall greens but not many other vegetables will yield if I plant them this late.

Tell me, do you have a bagger attachment to your mower? If you do then most of the weed seeds will end up in the bagger and then you can discard them

Lastly, these last 2 years I have gone with raised beds, and it is a lot easier for me if only because I filled the beds with half soil and half pine sawdust. The soil is so light that the weeds come up easily, and I can shove my hand into the soil to harvest my potatos. That means I do not have to dig. The beds dry out rather quickly but then they hold the plants above any standing water in the spring.

I have some weed barrier that I intend to cover the raised beds with this Fall, and that should keep the weeds out until next year when it is warm enough to plant.

And, speaking of weed barrier, could you lay down weed barrier and make a couple of holes for big plants like squash? Assuming that there is enough of a growing season left where you live, of course. Where I live it is too late in the season to plant squash, excepting possibly zucchini or summer squash.

One year I placed black plastic over my beds in late March. Uncovered it in mid May and all the weeds were baked down and dead. Easy to rake up some but did till some under.
