400-SKS an AR-15 would be a good alternative for most but I just do not like the gun
250-P-64 in 9x18 makarov for a pocket conceal carry gun It is amazingly accurate for me compare to other sized guns in 9mm luger.
250-Ruger 10/22 with a threaded muzzle so you could put a suppressor on it. A take down model for an extra 100 dollars would be a possible alternative

300 dollars an Italy Police issue Beretta 92 once again one of the more accurate handguns for me.

300 plus dollars left over for more ammo or get a maverick 88 shotgun.

What's so tough about your question is I have more than that in my AR alone let alone my other guns. Sure you can buy cheap, but I wouldn't. I guess under those restrictions I'd buy my two pistols, likely Glocks, A 12 Ga. shotgun, a Ruger .22 and pretty much be out of money.
IRL I wouldn't overspend but would surely double or more what your budget allows.

Been there, done that after the fires. First gun I bought was an AR since I wasn't sure how much longer they might be available, $700. Next was an M&P .40 (I will also buy a 9mm barrel and mags for it) $354. Also bought two Marlin 60's in .22LR, which was $380 which puts me close to $1500.

But since the insurance company was paying, I also replaced my model 1100 Rem and M77 Ruger for about another $2k. Still more to go but it is a start.

WASR10 - $500
Police Trade-in Glock17 - $350
Used Mossberg 500, 12 ga. -$150
Used Marlin XT-22 - $150

With a $1500 budget, that leaves $350 for a holster, a sling for the AK, a scope for the .22, mags and ammo.

honestly.. if i had to start like right now, given the poor state AKs are in right now, id probably have to go for an AR-15.. and i probably wont have any pistols post shtf.. not even sure one would need a .22lr rifle given you can just use a chamber adapter in an AR-15 for small game hunting with .22lr.. but for the sake of having a second rifle that could also be used as a backup.. a 10/22 or an MKIV.. i do not see much use for a 9mm/45acp sidearm when i have access to an intermediate caliber rifle

I guess I would go with..

Mossberg 12ga (Used) ~ 250
FNS-9 - 600 w/ night sights
S&W M&P15 Sport (Gen 2) ~ 500
Marlin Model 60 - 150

This is actually exactly how I started, except I went with 10/22 over the Marlin and the Mossberg was new. Oh and my M&P was the first gen (with 1:9 twist barrel).

All in all no regrets.. still have them all and all work wonderfully. Hope nothing terrible happens on that boating trip coming up ;-)

Great responses so far! But hey, I gotta jump in.

For $1500, (I hope the used market is ok)

$450-ish on a Glock 19, gen 2 or 3. If a G2 it will be cheaper, buy new night sights for it.
$500-ish on a PSA AR15, hardware to taste.
$125 on a quality weapons light for the AR
$40 for a good sling
$160 on a midgrade red dot (Primary Arms makes a great one with riser)
$the rest on good ammo, good mags, and whatever carry system you choose.

Honestly, get the pistol, rifle and a sling, and the carry/deploy system of choice early on. The other stuff is just gravy. Your training will depend on how you want to get to those extra mags (you did buy extra mags, right?) during training. I am personally a big fan of the warbelt/duty belt setup - 2 pistol mags, 2 rifle mags, etc etc as desired. Shop smart, keep it basic, the whole warbelt setup can be had for less than $200. Which leaves you more money for ammo, mags and ifaks!

Ruger American Predator in 223
Smith Revolver in 38/357
Remington 870 12 ga

Wouldnt need a 22 rf since I can do the same thing with cast 224 bullets in the RAP

In fact in a SHTF Situation ammo would be the bigger problem, I can cast bullets/projectiles for all three of the above, so I'd only have to stock pile power and primers.

Within the $1,000 budget, I'd likely go for a Tokarev, probably a Yugo M70 TT pistol in 9x19, which are about $200 in todays market. Mossberg 500, about $250, for $450 total, and an AMD-63, about $500 for a total of $950.

3 firearms, covers most bases of a SHTF setup on a budget price.

For the $1,500 limit I'd likely go with a .308 VEPR ($900, for barebones model still) and then a 10mm Glock. Probably a Glock 20 as it's smaller than a Glock 40 and can be more easily concealed. I've seen them go for $600, so there's $1,500 right there.

I'd say that covers most bases, short of hunting elephants or making 2,000yrd shots.

Gunbroker, search “interarms”
Find a bolt action 308, 30-06, or 300 mag: $500
Same search,
find a 9mm semi-auto pistol. $500 or less,
or find a Kimber Micro 9 for just over that.
Same search,
JW15, $200
Spend the rest of the $300 on reloading supplies and/or ammo.

I'd bargain hunt until I could build a sub $800 M16A4 clone.

Probably a BCM upper with a PSA lower.

Then I'd put a Eotech XPS3 for about $500 or an Aimpoint Pro which costs about $400-$500.

With the extra $200 bucks I'd look for a cheap used Mossberg 500 or get a .22 upper conversion kit for the AR as previously mentioned.

Glock 26
Benelli Supernova Pistol Grip
Savage.22lr bolt action
Ruger SP101 357 magnum 4.2inch
Not sure if $1500 will do it, but this is the order I would go by.
After that, a j frame in 38 special and a nice .22lr handgun. Well, there is never enough guns and ammo. I am sure you know it by now.

I came across some extra cash so I’m think of buying strictly 3-4 guns that would be used in a shtf event.
That's slim pickins. Since you used the phrase " extra cash" ......mags, ammo, etc.... sound like they are all gonna be tough to purchase as well. Optics , NVS, and cans may be completely out.

A few ideas.....

1. Start off by illuminating shotguns from the list.

2. Prioritize your requirements via rifle and handgun. This will come in handy if compromises bases on budget constraints have to be made. Then you can move on to number 3.

3.Look at cartridges you can afford to shoot, stock, and cache.

4. Know how to shop for used guns. If you dont, or simply want new to start with......shop with patience.

5. Learn to reload.

6 Versatility is a huge plus, as well as choosing guns that can be upgraded later just in case another 1K in extra cash shows up later.

If it were me on a strict budget....

Rimfire= 22lr . ( Rifle and/ or handgun) .

Charter arms Pathfinder.
Ruger 10 22.

CF handgun= 38spl.
Another Charter Arms or Rossi.

CF rifle = 7.62x39mm in a SKS or AK. ( One could also get by using 5.56mm and an AR15 )

The order would depend on if we are buying used or strictly new guns. All new = right at 1K.
