Like earlier suggested go semi auto rifle. AR or AK depending on which flavor you like. Stack mags and ammo deep. If you have waited this long you better get going. Literally purchase it today. Depending on the outcome of the elections they will go after semi auto rifles and "high capacity" mags first. You can always get a reliable shotgun for pretty cheap. A modern magazine fed semi auto rifle, maybe not.

Unless youre going to hunt, Id skip the shotgun. Especially if smaller statured people will be using them. Even the riot gun versions are heavy, cumbersome to handle, and recoil can be intimidating. Contrary to what you often hear, even open choked shotguns still need to aimed like a rifle, especially at close range.

Something like one of the carbine or shorter length AR's would make the most sense to me. Easy enough for most to handle and shoot, even kids. A lot more versatile overall too.

You did not mention what type of 9mm that you already have. If it is a full size high capacity model, then I would opt for a smaller more compact and concealable model as a 2nd pistol. That would give you more options if you should decide to carry concealed. Also, you would remain with a common caliber. If you already have the compact model then buy the full size model for the high capacity.

I am not sure. All I know is that mine is flawless and it's the 2016 production.

Shotgun. Either 12ga or 20ga for common ammo. Either one will defend your home and will work in urban combat.

You can not go wrong with an AR15. You can also not go wrong with a shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge.

I would suggest a shotgun then as soon as you can swing it a AR or AK. A personal arsenal of a pistol shotgun and rifle will have you well.armed.

I'd get an AR. 30 rounds is much more than 8 and 500m is more than 150.

Ive never understood the thought that there was a specific distance, reason, allowable response, etc, for self defense.

Self defense is self defense, the situation determines the response.

Regardless of someone elses self imposed "rules", Id prefer to have all available options open to me.

I would normally suggest a shotgun with what you already have.. But if Hillary wins tonight I am with some who have said to get a high capacity long gun, AK, AR. After getting some mags and ammo their should be time still to get the shotgun..

ex-GI M-1 Carbine parts gun/shooter w/15-round magazines (not a collector quality gun)
Auto-Ordnance M-1 Carbine clone w/15-round magazines

Just my opinion.

I don't believe in limiting yourself to only two or three firearms.

I wish I loaded up on Twinkies the same way I did with firearms and ammo.

Shotgun. Because there's nothing you can't hunt legally with a shotgun, but many states prohibit hunting deer with any .223 cartridge. Some states prohibit rifles altogether. Rem 870 with a short unrifled "slug" barrel, and a long bird-hunting barrel as well. 20 gauge is good, but there's more ammo choices in 12 gauge. Shotguns will be nearly the last type of gun they'll prohibit, if it comes to that. The VERY last will be break-top single shots like the H&R. (I'm sitting on an early Savage 219 which has both 12 gauge and .30-30 barrels.) From that standpoint, a traditional-stocked Mini-14 scores much higher than any AR/AK "tactical", and is still mighty effective. Even Massachusetts still allows them by name. Eventually a high grade .22 rifle, bolt or lever action for small game and garden defense duty. Not semi-auto, because nobody can resist wasting ammo with one.

I have always thought a .22 lr rifle and a shotgun should be your first weapons. after that a good centerfire rifle. I have never seen a need for an AK or AR. While many disagree, we each have to make our choices and live with them. Look at your current needs and projected needs. Fill your needs before your fantasies. I am not opposed to a good 22lr pistol. After your needs are filled you should look to the future. Many weapons will no longer be available. If clinton is elected we may see a serious decline in what is available.

OP here....thanks so much for all the ideas and recommendations....I am thinking about getting all these at some point:

1. 22lr rifle
2. shotgun
3. M1A SOCOM 16

There were many AR/AK recommendations as expected here so what do you guys think about M1A SOCOM 16 instead of recommended AR/AK?
