I do not have a favorite caliber.

However I really enjoy shooting .22LR, 9mm, .45LC, 5.7X28mm, .223/5.56X45mm, 7.62x39mm and .300 WBY MAG.

My favorite is my 338 Lapua but even hand loading is expensive.
Next inline is the 308. If I could own only one gun, it would be a 308Win.
As for Concealed Carry, 45ACP

The list is incomplete, so many great cartridges to use that are not on the list.

.357 mag
.40S&W
.243
6.5x55
.44mag

The list could just go on and on.

For me the primary use of a firearm is for hunting.
my 2 favorite all round hunting rifles (that I own) are chambered in 308
However for my type of hunting at least 6 different cartridges could do the job equally as well

I'm going to assume you mean "cartridge" since there are many different cartridges that share the same caliber and have vastly different performance results and ranges... That being said, I love 6mm Remington for smaller caliber as being fast and flat through medium to long range. 7mm magnum for the same reason but a bit more punch is needed. In handgun platform, I carry a 40sw daily and have never been disappointed, but my baby is 357 magnum. Of notable mention is 17hmr for the fun factor and what it can do accurately on small targets inside short to medium range.

I can't believe I read this entire thread and not one person mentioned that the question regarding "caliber" has 10 options, 5 of which are the same "caliber."
.308
30-06
300 BLK
7.62x39 (technically .309)
7.62x54

All are "30 caliber options."

The thread should read "do you prefer a 30 caliber rifle round, a .223 or a random pistol round?

You missed .303 Savage which is also .308.

I voted 9mm for availability, cost and that's what I carry daily. Also 22lr for training new shooters, small game, and still drastically cheaper than any other ammo. For rifle I would again go with what I have 5.56/.223. are rounds that have minimal recoil and have the ability for a number of shooters to use the same rifle. Any ar platform is easy to show someone in 22lr for first time shooters and have them already know the ergonomics, safety, charging handle moving to a 556 or 300blk or 9mm. This will be a debate that will never end. I have friends that will only carry 40,45 or 357. Some carry 380. Most carry 9mm. Again availability of ammo at reasonable prices from practice and defense ammo. I really depends on the situation, it's much harder to conceal an AR pistol than a handgun on a daily basis. If I'm in the woods know for bears and bobcats will change what I want to have with me. Always have a 9mm on me, add a rifle/shotgun depending on environment.

My favorite is 6.5mm or .264. There is enough projectile diameter to shoot 80 grain projectiles to 160 grain with a satisfactory BC. 25 cal is a close second. With 25 cal you can go from 25-20 to 25-06. with both calibers you can shoot cast projectiles and jacketed satisfactorily.

.300 win mag is my favorite for what it can do. Not cheap and not a round to shoot all of the time.

22lr and 12ga, for being multipurpose, cheap and ubiquitous. Yes, 22lr is getting much easier to find around here, and no more limit on how much you want to buy.

By this logic, 22lr and 5.56 is the same caliber. 😜

10mm is the best and it's not even on the list what's with that?? The power of a 357 magnum in a semi auto gun! Enough power for a woods gun (in most places) without having to lug a long gun, and better capicity than a revolver, and without the fat/beefy revolver cylinder
