Default .45 or 5.7

Advertise Here

i'm up in the air on whether to purchase a kimber raptor or FN 5.7.

I feel like I can also find ammo for the 5.7, good times or bad. Although it may not be as common in the regular places that happen to sell ammo.

I have tons of .45 brass that I can reload and 1911 parts are pretty common. I do not have a .45, so I would have to stock up on ammo which is getting scarce.

5.7 isn't the easiest to load for, 45ACP is a piece a cake. Cast bullets work fine especially for training and are cheap to make.

That's a question like should I get a Diesel 4 Cab Long Bed Pickup Truck or a Twin Turbo Corvette (could be slight difference)...

Anyway - 45.

I can only speak for the FN 5.7. It is fun and the light recoil makes for fast follow up shots with BEAUTIFUL tight groups. The down side is it is bulky and ammo is pricey. The worst part is the placement of the safety is just terrible. Now you can train on it and get comfortable with it but it is still a very poor decision on FNs part to go with a nonstandard safety.

If you get one and are right handed shooter then practice using your left hand thumb to disengage the safety. You may also find it easier to use your left hand to press the mag release and slide the mag out for reloading.

WAY BACK when we had a saying...
"We carried a .45 because they didn't make a .46."

When the 5.7 came out.. it was fun and unique and I was tempted...
BUT

it wasn't even a .45 let alone a .46.

I have seen a fair number of folks shot with .45acp. I have seen the effects.
never have I seen someone shot with the 5.7.

Just never felt it could be an improvement on what I had used for so long with such good effects as well as what I have seen from other incidents.

Let me know when they build it in a .46

I think I'd buy a Ruger-57 and an M&P45 or G21 for the cost of the FN...

Can't beat a G21, even an older gen if you want to save money. Buddy of mine found police surplus at a gunstore, barely used with minimal holster wear, G21 Gen 2 for $300 with 4 mags, tritium sights and a box. Throw on a TLR1 for $90, get a Safariland light Bering holster for around $70 and you have everything you need for under $500. It's the Jeep of guns and parts are everywhere for them. I personally want a 10mm Glock as I live in bear country.

5.7 is a 22 and in any type of serious engagement the perp won't even know he has been shot till the altercation is over. Not a serious question imho unless for a small statured person etc.

I carry a Sig Ultra in 45 but have for the time being put it away in favor of 9mm, mag capacity etc. 17+1 but my zombie gun is a 2011 long slide in 10mm. 200 gr HC packs a wallop.

Keep in mind the 45 makes a big hole that lets in a lot of air and lets out a lot of blood.

I really don't understand the want of a 5.7 for us lowly civilians. If the "special people" ammo was widely available I kind of get it, but it's not... so I say the .45 (which I would have voted for anyway).

I'd prefer the .45 for the sole reason that I can easily cast & reload for it.

Haven't seen much in the way of bullet options, especially for cast projectiles which would be nearly as bad as .224 The only mold I could find for NOE was .220 which is smaller than the .221 I'd seen referenced for the 5.7 And since we mere civilians cannot own the "good stuff" I'm in the camp that it's more of a novelty round and not sustainable in the long run. If I were looking for a one-off caliber for my safe I'd likely look closer at the 22 TCM since I've got a lot of empty 9mm brass.

If you're taking a poll

Mark me down for the 45acp over the 5.7

I will say though, it does depend on what your target is...

If I had to choose between those two I'd take 45 all day.

I’d get the .45 first, and then if you still have an itch for the 5.7 get it later. I wouldn’t get a 5.7 in lieu of a .45 .

I must admit, I don’t “get” the 5.7 anyhow.
