In a survival, post-civilization situation (which I believe is the context of this thread) then I'd have to agree with the general consensus that it'd be neck and neck between something like a small to medium sized revolver in .357 or .44 Magnum and just about any reliable 9mm semi-auto ever (Sig P320, Rex Zero 1, Glock 19, FN 509, CZ, Beretta APX) with heavy emphasis on the simplest systems, like the SIG, Glock, or Beretta.

However, if this is in a ROL (i.e. ongoing civilization) and replacement ammo and parts were plentiful, or if I had plenty of provisions to reload and stock ammunition, then the answer is a definitive Glock 29, Gen 4. It's the only do anything in every situation imaginable pistol I can think of. I've heard rumors that 9mm and .45 ACP replacement barrels are also available, though I feel like that might be cheating the spirit of this thread.

It's not entirely unforeseeable that a government could limit and outlaw multiple gun ownership... it's happened often throughout history, usually in situations of civil war or insurgency. The Afghans were allowed one firearm per house, which usually turned out being an AK, but sometimes they would get a special permit to carry a pistol and make that their one pistol. Technically, if they are carrying their pistol outside the house and the AK stays in the house with the family, then they aren't breaking the law.

itd be my bulgarian makarov, you wont find a simpler, more reliable, easier to maintain pistol than a mak, and 9x18 produced more than enough energy for self defense

In the context of WROL, I'd like the Ruger GP-100 in .44 Special 3" bbl with the compact grip so it actually fits my hand. While I don't have bears, we do have cats and hogs. If not that then I like the feel of the SW 69 .44 Mag.

If ROL is still around, then possibly a Kahr CT45 with a chopped grip.

Glock 23 without a doubt...add a Lone Wolf 9mm drop in barrel for around $100 and you are set. .02

Never thought I'd say this for a very long time but, Glock G19. Commonality, versatility, capacity and reliability all in one pistol. If I could stretch it a bit, it'd be a G23 with a 40-9 LWD comversion barrel and 9x19 Glock mags for caliber flexibility

I can hear the snickering and hand wringing already but here goes.....

My PMR 30....

It weighs 18.8 to 19 oz fully loaded and is surprisingly slim (its awesome for ccw because of those reasons) Weight is a HUGE factor.

It holds 30 rounds per mag..... No other pistol comes close in this size/class

Its accurate enough to hunt small game at close range.

.22WMR hollow points will kill bad guys and not go through too many walls if any (home defense) Hitting family members by mistake. For those who claim its not a powerful enough round for bad guys.... maybe YOU can't.... but I am positive that I could kill a full grown man with .22wmr.

The ability to carry literally thousands of rounds with minimal weight while bugging out is a big plus too.

yeah, 22wmr has plenty of energy and penetration... when fired from the 18"+ rifles it was actually designed for, study up on the ballistics youre actually getting out of the pistol barrel and you will see why people laugh at it

I would choose one if my full sized carry pistols in a caliber suited to the threats in my area.

Either my 4" Ruger GP 100 in 357 mag, or Sig 220 SAO in 10 mm.

I just added the light to my Sig.

If I could only have one hand gun it would be a 357 mag. semi auto. why semi-auto is because its a lot easier/faster reloading when needed. The reason for 357 mag is it can kill ANYTHING and everything in the woods or in the city. The primary roll of a hand gun is personal def. If you want to hunt then get a weapon/tool for hunting. and one for conceal carry.

I think you need more than just one firearm, but that's just me

I am pretty confident I could drop just about any man with a 22 lr with a 4inch barrel.... Let alone a WMR.

My PMR30 was getting 1350 fps using 40 grain Hollow points and just under 1400 fps using 40 grain CCI fmj 2 weeks ago. Plenty of killing ballistics for me.Throw in 30 round mags and I have way more killing potential than with my 16 round 9mm.

But that's just me.... I tend to keep a cool head during crazy situations, I have learned this about myself after being faced with some bad stuff, including life threatening stuff.

Like I said before....... Some people may not feel confident with a 22 but I DEF am.

If I could only have one, I would choose my Ruger Blackhawk in .45LC.

10mm Javelina...
or maybe a Ruger 41 Mag.
then again - maybe an AR-15 pistol in 300Blk with a 14" barrel.
