I like what the good sheriff did here; but apparently burning the flag is a valid expression of the first amendment (Supreme court decision in Texas v. Johnson 1989). However the article states that the punishment punishment was "for destroying government property while in custody"; so I think one can argue that it is a valid punishment, and not a violation of the inmates first amendment (do inmates still have constitutional rights anyway?).
As much as people whine about his tough love approach he's responding to a torrent of abuses and out-of-control immigration, violence and so on from over the border.
Good for him!
If I own it [and I do] I can burn it [but I won't]
You don't get to come to my house and burn my stuff. Even if you were forced to come to my house.
1. Many of there rights are lost or suspended. They are in person.
Who would want to hear what they have to say! They are convicted criminals.
2. It was not their flag.
"The punishment for destroying government property while in custody."
3. Everyone talks bad about reeducation camps. There are arguments that they do or don't exist. Many inmates are in jail instead of dead because of mercy and the possibility of rehabilitation.
They need to learn how to respect other peoples property as well as the nation as a whole.
4. They should get 30 days added to their sentence for distraction of property.
Prison systems across the USA should take lessons from him. We are paying their for their college, medical, clothing, food, housing etc... Make prisons a punishment that no one wants to go back to.

He has been upfront and vocal about his methods being purposely designed to make prisoners NOT want to come back. If every law enforcement leader was like that, the USA would be a different place.
I'd say it's a very appropriate punishment for destroying property that doesn't belong to them. The Sheriff seems to consistently use good old common sense. Letting the inmates run the show would be a mistake.
On a much more serious note...he shouldn't be feeding them bread (wheat) at all. Better nutrition is scientifically proven to decrease criminal behavior.
If people understood just how much so, there would be a revolution by tomorrow!
I'm sure there are other law enforcement officers who do similar that go unnoticed because they aren't raging attention whores.
