Default iPhone's latest update sneakily adds COVID data exposure logging

They have opened gates in the operating system to allow 'public health authorities' to gain access to information. note that apple iphone logs a lot of personal health data, your fingerprints, your face ID etc. This would give real-time access to government officials in future as apps as developed.

Quote:
Apple has released iOS 13.5, which includes support for the Exposure Notification API that it co-created with Google to support public health authorities in their contact-tracing efforts to combat COVID-19. The API requires third-party apps developed by public health authorities for use, and none have yet been released, but iOS device users already have access to COVID-19 Exposure Logging global settings.

You could start treating your iphone like a landline and leave it at home.

instead of using your phone for calls use your laptop and magicJack VoIP $40yr
Instead of using your phone for music use a laptop
instead of using your phone for looking stuff up use the laptop and public wifi with a vpn
instead of using your phone for a camera, use a camera.
instead of using your phone for maps use a gps
instead of using your phone for notes use a pen and paper

I think I'm going to try what I just typed out lol

Just need gps, magicjack, & dc charger for the laptop

You could also just turn off any features you didn't trust....which is the purpose of the settings the link is actually talking about.

So could this COVID update be blocked by the phone user?
How?

Never mind it’s a freaking app you have to download

Literally, the article that in the link is showing just how to do it. And yes, in order to participate you would have to download an app, which doesn't even exist yet. 'Sneaky' apple sneakily added the ability to disable the app before it even came out.

Apple has long set up there phones so you can control any tracking features from the master settings menu instead of having to do it app by app.

Wait, you actually read the article before commenting on it?

It is off by default.
It requires a third party app to be enabled.
You need to download said third party app and then allow it to collect and share data.

As long as that remains true I have no problem with it.

You know you have a choice to update or not. I never update. I believe it's a way to make your phone last less long. I never updated my previous one and it lasted at least 7 years ( yes, swear to God, it was my very first one) . And it was still working when I got the one I have now, only reason I got a new one because I wanted to be able to use it in Europe.

I don't have an iPhone. I don't even have a "smart" phone. Just a plain old, old-school flip phone, which has no apps. Heck, I don't even have texting on it (had it turned off by the company.)

Good that you placed anything iPhone related in a "disaster" forum. Perfect choice!

Thats what I did. My flip phone gets me some looks but I don't care. It does all I want a phone to do. It get messages and makes phone calls. Thats all I ever wanted it for. I have a nice Cannon camera that takes SD cards and a Garman GPS.

And I am considering getting another land line and getting rid of my cell phone. Maybe get a trac-fone to carry in the truck in case I break down. But not give the number to anyone.

If I was really worried about being tracked, I'd buy one of those cases that block cell signals.

That is very unusual isn't it? He should be drummed off the internet for failure to come to conclusions based on a headline alone. Who does that?
