M-60 receivers were prone to cracking. In one year I had 2 crack. There was no report on our end. Funny thing about ****ants, they know more about everything.

And I know that several weapons failures went unreported.

That said: I'd not ask the man to post anything with his name, SSN, bank routing number, etc...

Weapons failure IS a big deal... and was not uncommon.
People carting around broken NVG'S just because if it was issued the T&E was filled.... who gave a damn if it was just useless weight. Etc.

ETA: Can I call it, or can I call it?
I concur and the idea of bringing broken gear on missions or to training was a dumb idea then and it is still a dumb idea today. I think for most of us,we could right more accurate after action later more truthfully than what we put in our initial reports. Because of adrenaline, stress etc. I know I will be mowing , running the weed eater. , Checking game cameras tinkering in the barn etc. and something will just pop in my mind that I know I should have put in a report. Not really overthinking it but 4 Marines or Soldiers involved in the same action will definitely have the same big picture of events but, there will be little things they see differently and they will more than likely all be in the same 50 meter square during said action or engagement. JMHO

I will track down the source later but I read somewhere that there are supposedly 3 million+ AKs in civilian hands in the U.S., seems pretty popular.

Visions of terrorists in the Middle East, Africa, South America, pretty much everywhere from the nightly news, that banana magazine is a target indicator. "Bad guy".
That's all the more reason to know how to operate them.
Let them be your resupply, or be ready to blend in when it suits your needs.

Your enemies weapons can be your friend.

This ^ and owning and operating one's enemies' weapons is a very good indicator of victory over that very enemy.

And victory is, or should always be, the goal of any military conflict, seems to me.

Gunny Highway “This is the AK-47 Assault Rifle, the preferred weapon of our enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired at you.”

As some found out the hard way using an enemy battlefield pick up, that sound can draw “friendly” fire.

Something to think about.
