Default Question About Domesticated Rabbit Furs

Advertise Here

Plan on getting some rabbits in the next few months to breed, sell and eat. I got to wondering if there were any domesticated rabbit fur buyers out there that would buy from someone raising rabbits. I would think white is probably the best of those furs out there if they are sellable or is it just wild rabbit fur that is bought and sold?

I do have experience raising rabbits. Helped my dad with ours for 3 or 4 years. We had over 30 of them for a couple of years there that he sold for meat and pets.

Would like some input. One idea I thought about was raising some rabbits that are on the Livestock Conservation threatened list. Maybe those furs because of being from a threatened breed might be more valuable?

Just wondering and kicking around thoughts because I would hate to see the fur go to waste by throwing it away. My mother suggested making quilts out of them or seat covers for my vehicle. Which was and is an interesting thought.

Fur buyers want white since it can be dyed as needed.

Looks like China has the market. Average price is about 50c.
Rabbit hides are thin. Try tanning using pickling salt and Alum.
I tanned a mink and muskrat last winter and I was happy how they turned out.

All furs are better taken during the cold months. I don't know of any commercial fur buyers for rabbit. There is a commercial market for the meat. I have tanned a few rabbit pelts but, I think the the fancy colors are most attractive. Guess depending on use?
Dying pelts is a trick, its not like dying wool or cotton material. I have always wanted to make usable items like jackets and etc. Not having the patience to sew these item by hand, it takes a special sewing machine for furs.

If you can get the breed that they use in rabbit pens where they run dogs to teach them to hunt you can make some good money also you can build a worm bed under the pen and let the rabbits do the work.
