Default benefits of a hook shaped blade?

For the purpose of self defense what advantage would a hook shaped blade have over a traditional/standard/most commonly used straight edge blade? I could see how a hook shaped blade pull and cut if slashing, but is that it?

A hook shaped blade is primarily for pulling brush toward you, so it can be controlled or removed. The shape allows for shallow side cuts to bend trunks over without completely severing them; as with hedge-laying. In the middle ages, the bill book was used to pull knights off their horses.

A hook shaped blade would not be my first choice in today's world. You want a blade capable of stabbing.
