There are endless firearm and caliber debates about home defense. I can see where a potential or new gun owner would see that as the overwhelmingly most important aspect of home defense because that is all that seems to be discussed on the internet and at the range.
When it comes to preparedness, this representation tends to put the cart before the horse. Important preparedness aspects like....
"Why would I have a home invasion?"
"How would my home get invaded?"
"How would I know my home was invaded?"
"What lifestyle choices should I change to be prepared for home defense?
...tend get swept under the rug once the firearm/caliber has been decided and purchased.
As survivalists and preparedness-minded folks how do you answer the above questions? Have you seen new gun owners or other preparedness folks fall into the "Gun N' Done" mindset.
Well, unless your term implies "someone is home", I can chime in here. Our home was "invaded" while nobody was home.
The first clue was that the monitored alarm when off and there was nobody home to check on it. The second clue was when I drove up, our two front doors were wide open. Turns out, some miscreants simply kicked down the two front doors. You could literally see the footprint on the door where they kicked it. That covers the middle two questions.
The "why" was to steal from us.
There was a group working the neighborhood over and their MO was to gain entry, dash to the master bedroom, grab whatever they could see, and dash out before the police could get there on the assumption that there was a monitored alarm.
Lifestyle changes? We have a guest bedroom in the back of the house that you can see through the sidelights for the front door. I figured they looked through the sidelights, saw the guest bedroom through the open BR door, and mistook it for the master. So, we close that door when we leave the house. Other than, put up some cameras. One is visible from the door through the living room bay window. Has a nice blinking red light on it so they can't miss it unless they are trying. I ordinarily keep a firearm to hand now, too, in case someone tries while we are home.

Better doors would seem to be in order. Sorry. But thats my soapbox. I can't get over people who will have a 300,000 home filled with a lifetime of possessions, (not to mention, their family) and crappy cardboard doors that can just be kicked down. It boggles me.
