France is bombing the snot out of Islamist insurgents in Mali and staged a commando raid in Somalia (that didn't work out), all without the US holding their hand. I'll be darned.

Was amazed myself when I first saw the News, immediate thought was "Mercs from other countries" with the French tags

As far as im concerned they can turn Mali and Somalia into a glass parking lots. I know thats cold, Oh well.
Those Pirates based in Somalia should have been on the free fire list for years.

All of which begs the question...why? I don't see why any of this is France's business.

I'd have to look it up, but I think Mali was a former colony of theirs, so they have ties. Somalia, the islamists there are holding a French citizen - they were trying to free him.

Mali is a former colony and they have a base in Djibouti. Still, it's none of their business.

I think we've seen enough stuff done by the US to realize that these expensive overseas military adventures have very little benefit for us at home and typically result in unintended negative consequences for the people in question, and sometimes for us.

I'm not advocating isolation...just keeping the military in our own borders, or at least our own continent. France should do the same. Citizens who go abroad for business, touristing or whatever do so at their own risk.

They've been reasonably good at blasting the tar out of people who can't really fight back. Lots of examples in their long colonial history. It's just the fair fights they surrender/lose regularly.

France has already asked for our help
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2013/0...-help-in-mali/

I'm wondering if these are French or the French Foreign Legion. If it's the French, then they probably would need a lot more help than the Legion would.

Yeah, never understood that. The French Foreign Legion is about as French as a McDonald's French fry, but if they spend 20 years as a human shield, their reward is that they get to spend the rest of their lives wearing perfume and eating snails as a French citizen?

Am I supposed to pretend they've got a great military track record? Is, lying = saying thanks? It's not like we haven't helped them out a bunch of times when they got in over their heads.

The French MILITARY is actually pretty competent.

The French LEADERSHIP, military and political, is what usually sinks them...

Dien Bien Phu.

French Uranium mines and yellowcake production in N. Mali. France is the world's major user of domestic nuclear power (as well as a nuclear military power). Something like 3/4 of their power generation. It's about domestic electricity, refreshed nuke warheads, and expensive infrastructure investments and relationships in Mali. France keeps a rather large (as a percentage of their total military) force permanently in West & Central Africa. It's one of the reasons they have provided only modest contingents to places like Afghanistan.

France carries the West's water in Africa...counterbalancing both Islamic expansion southward through the Sahel into Christian/Animist Black Africa...and Chinese economic interests in the same areas. Their forces are actually quite good. I've worked with them.

Yeah, I've made my share of French military jokes, but in the end, their forces are competent and credible...just not always on the same sheet of music as America. In Africa, for the most part, our interests and goals coincide. Somalia being a center of gravity for the bad guys and a place where we conduct military business also.
