Hey all. Been reading on this forum for a few hours (FAQs, larger threads) and I'm hoping you all can answer some questions for me.

I'm looking for a radio that can accept a larger antenna, so that I can set up a mobile radio base station for use with inexpensive hand held radios. I'm not trying to boost the range of the hand held units, just establish a central hub for communicating between various members.

Thinking of using GMRS for this if possible, but MURS seems like a possibility from everything I've been reading. The reason I would prefer the GMRS is for simplicity and expense.

Can you all point me in the right direction for my base station hardware?

The Dakota Alert MURS will take an external antenna and work well with the Dakota Alert handheld radios.

Until you go with amateur radio licenses for every one, or business band, I think this would work about as well as anything else, though GMRS has the advantage of being able to use a repeater. But if that extended range isn't needed, then I'd stick with the MURS.

Just my opinion.

The basic precept is that they make a 5 watt base station radio that requires a license that allows you to hook it up to a external base station antenna which can be attached to a tower not to exceed I think it is 37' in height above average terrain.

You have to read the GMRS rules to make sure - since you are going to use the bubble pack radios. The bubble pack radios allows you to operate without a license on the FRS - but cannot operate with a detachable antenna type radio with any radio that produces more then .5 watts and a antenna that has no gain.

A bubble pack radio will not work split - hence it will not work with a repeater - unless the repeater was a simplex repeater...
