No, there are hundreds of makes and variants that share the same magazine, as opposed to the VZ-58 which has like 2-3. That's like saying the FAL or M4 use a proprietary mag when there are literally hundreds of variants that share it, and dozens of manufacturers.

obligatory VZ pics.

They look fun and for the price they sound worthwhile. I like my AK but I really like the true bolt hold open and more exposed ejection port.

I can't use my Springer M1A magazines in any of my AR15s. As a matter of fact, I don't know where I would find more M14 magazines if TEOWAWKI hit tomorrow.

That doesn't lessen the effectiveness or the utility of the rifle.
I have a total of 10magazines for my VZ2008. But even if I only have one magazine left, I can still feed 7.62x39 stripper clips straight into my VZ2008 through the open bolt into the magazine.
Know any AK47s that can do that?

Awesome.

But youre missing the overall point. M14 mags are proprietary too. However, even with that, they are plentiful. VZ mags are not. If you want to go in depth even, the Army still uses the M14 and has tons of magazines. There are thousands and thousands of the rifles in both private and government hands here.

Im not worried about M14 mags drying up and becoming hard to find, but I definately have that concern with VZ mags.

As much as I appreciate the concern from several of you to try and sell me on the VZ mag concept, it isnt that big of a deal, and you arent going to change my mind. I focus on commonality and ease of procurement with just about all of my guns, and the VZ fits nowhere in that model.

i dunno if another canadian has piped up yet but up north here the VZ58 (CZ858) is big up here because AK's are a weapon were not allowed to own. The first ones to come into our country were CZ built on surplus army receivers with some work done to make them semi only, which is what i have. Then CSA (czech sport arms) started bringin them in on newly manufactured receivers, im not sure about the rest of the parts.

They are excellent shooters and quality made. I have alot of rounds down range through mine and the only problem iv had is 2-3 mags out of the 10 i own wont lock bolt to the rear sometimes. And that probably has to do with the mags being pinned via a rivet to hold only 5. Iv never used it for hunting but i imagine there is some good factory loads you can buy in 7.62x39 if you cant reload. mine shoots czech, romanian, and chinese very well. The ergonomics of them are sorted out minus the mag catch, which iv replaced with a larger one.

I'm a big fan of the VZ-58.

I highly recommend the NEA upper handguard. It returns to zero and allows co-witness with the iron sights when using a Bushnell TRS-25 or similar.
I know that co-witness with the irons doesn't matter to a lot of folks but it does to me.
