Hi guys, I just have a small plea to everyone who will try (or who does).

If you auto diagnose and automedicate, please, PLEASE PLEASSSEEE hear me out!

Please try to act reasonably if you ever use the antibiotics, complete FULL TREATMENTS and don't stop taking the antibiotics the minute (or day) you feel better. Please document yourselves with the antibiotic monographs (basically books on the specific antibiotics)

Example of a monograph (for amoxicillin, in this case): http://www.drugs.com/monograph/amoxicillin.html

Failure to do so will usually end up in resistance buildup and you might put your loved ones/general population at risk. This is even more critical if the SHTF as there won't be a near-endless supply of antibiotics to take.

Also, please take care of your health and at least try to diagnose what you have. Not every infection is treated by the same antibiotic! Try reading the monographs to identify which antibiotic you should take first!

Finally, don't take antibiotics for nothing! It's BAD for you (yes, I'm not joking...) Most antibiotics have toxic side-effects so don't fool yourself they are "good" for you. A common cold with stuffy nose, runny nose, coughs and phlegm DON'T warrant an antibiotic intervention. Rather, proper hydration, fever control (if present) and rest will do you better. Use antibiotics in the last case scenarios only!

On this,

Thanks and have fun reading the monographs!

I disagree.... way back 30 yrs ago, when I got sick, I would get the typical 10 day prescription. I usually only took them for maybe 3 days. Truth is.... IT WORKED!

Fast Forward 30 yrs later.... guess what?.... I still only need about 3 days worth and I'm good!!!! There have been a few occasions where I needed to go to 5 days, but that has always been the max.

It's my personal belief that taking antibiotics for 10 days is where we are developing those super strains.

The problem that caused the super strains is those like you who only took a part of their prescribed dose, yes they felt better, but instead of killing the bug it was only knocked out, as it came back it adapted so that it would not get knocked out in the same way. It learned very quickly that it needed to adapt to survive.

came back and adapted? came back 2yrs later! and yet 30 yrs later, I still only need 3 days.

Those occasional times I need 5 days is because I got sooooooooo sick and waited too long before I took any pills.

Not all infections effect everyone the same, two people can cut themselves with the same thing one might get an infection and one might not. But the germ have mutated and adapted over the years.

Granted... I'm not a doctor, but's it's always been MY THEORY.....

I'm so sick my immune system can't fight it. It's too powerful. I start taking antibiotics and it gives my system the *boost* that it needs. Next thing you know.... my immune system kicks in and is able to fight it the rest of the way.

By taking antibiotics the full 10 days, you are deprieving your immune system a chance to strengthen itself.

JMHO (good thing I only get THAT sick every couple of yrs)

The real problem with most immune systems is that for a while Dr's were giving treating every ear infection, sore throat, ect of every infant with antibiotics, not allowing the childs own immune system to develop. It used to be when I was young and is becoming more of a practice again to treat the symptoms....fever,pain,swelling and let the body deal with the infection. I have learned much about Immune Systems since my better half was diagnosed with Primary Immune Deficiency(more than likely caused by many years of prednisone therapy for an Auto Immune Disease). By the time you are an adult your immune system is pretty set as getting better but it can decline.

I think the theory isn't that it causes a problem necessarily for you, but that if you don't take the full course, the bacteria adapt, reproduce, spread to someone else, and because you created a resistant strain the antibiotics don't work for them. You might feel better, but your selfishness can cause someone else misery. That's why you need to take the full course, not for you, but for the rest of us.

BTW that wasn't supposed to sound as blunt as it does. Just don't know how to sugar coat it. Not meant as a personal attack or anything like that. Sorry.
