Fmr CIA Dir. James Woolsey knows how fragile our grid is for both EMP and the likelihood of a Carrington level event to happen again.

These solar storms are getting much more attention these days, and while I'm not sure the reasoning, I'll take the revelation.

Yes, the sun is a unpredictable (for the most part) beast and it very well could hurdle us into the dark age.

If you really want to learn about it. Look up Suspicious0berservers on youtube and watch "How to watch the sun" It's a jump start on the topic to say the least.

The threat is imminent, the questions is when... could be in a couple days, could be in a couple hundred years.

I worry more about low solar activity draining out magnetic field, to where were venerable to galactic radiation. We need some CMEs right now.

Some people need more stuff to worry about. Solar flares make the perfect excuse.

Here’s a link to an article that describes how the earth narrowly escaped another EMP catastrophe in mid-July of this year (2013) when a Carrington-class coronal mass ejection crossed the orbit of the Earth and basically just missed us,” said Peter Vincent Pry.

I have a question - If let say a solar flare occured 5PM EST this afternoon that was powerful enough to at least take out the majority of the Northern American grid
how long would be have? minutes, hours or a few days notice?

If it was the hours or days I could make a mad dash for Wal-mart and Sams. Around here
we have three kinds of people, college students, college professors and lower middle class/poor who work for the university.

The college students don't watch the news so they would never know it was coming. The college professor/maxists type would expect the govt to come save them and the poor workers don't have the money to dash out and fill a vehicle with food and supplies.
A dash for food and supplies would be real doable for me. PS - I have a decent stock pile
but you can never have enough if we were to go back to the stone age.

I just did some research. The Carrington Event took 17.6 hours to make it to earth.

I could get alot done in 17 hours.

true, but you should limit yourself to maybe a dozen hours after original alert. Lord knows you don't want to be out and about when it hits... unless you're close to home and really want to see an historical event of a collapsing society first hand.

Walmart is a three minute drive from my house. Society or at least we call it
here in Northern WV won't collapse the minute the power goes out.

McLovin, I think that your question really refers to a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) since that’s the one that’ll give us a bad time (like Carrington) and those are known to vary in their speed, so the CME could reach the earth in anywhere from a day and a half to a couple of days.

There are two more unknowns though – the relative position of the earth to the sun at the time of CME and the power (speed) at which that particular CME travels. The other unknown is when are we (ordinary civilians) told. Those speed and elapsed time numbers are based on the time of the CME which may not necessarily be when our “beloved” leaders decide to tell us.

It might not be a bad idea to check this site, Space Weather Prediction Center (link below) once a week or so to know when a biggie is predicted. It’s operated by the National Weather Service so I can’t say if they may have to clear their predictions with DHS or the administration. Anyway, you’re looking for “X” class storms, the A,B,C, and M classes aren’t likely to cause us harm – the “X” class is the nasty one and they range from X1 to X?, they don’t stop at 9. An X class storm was rated as an X28. Since we weren’t measuring these things when it occurred, no one knows how the Carrington one would have rated (but bigger than X28 for sure).

Hope this helps, you should have ample time to clear the shelves and help clean the gene pool of those academic-types. Of course that assumes that our fearless leaders decide to tell us that it’s coming. BTW, Air Force One is protected from EMPs.

The telescopes and satellites we use to monitor such things would use up several hours of that time transmitting their own signals back to us, as well as being processed and confirmed. I wouldn't hope for more than about half that much notice.

Basically, just enough time for everyone to get the message and freak out. Which is why they probably wouldn't tell us. Being caught by surprise would give a period of time for general public confusion, instead of panic, during which emergency orders can be decided, delivered and begun.
