Default Polish AK-74 Tantal . . . Worth Buying?

Advertise Here

yes i know this thread has been done a few times but my searches weren't bringing up anything recent. Fleet Farm, which is near me, has the Polish Tantal for $390 in their store and I'm debating buying one. I know they have bad reviews for the older ones but i've also heard that this issue was resolved around 2010, and its not 2012.

I do not want to place an online order if i don't have to because i will get stuck shelling out $50 to some local shop just for them to receive and hand the gun over to me. The only local shops that carry the "better" versions of AK's also want $150 above online pricing.

So my main thing is, is this a decent buy. How does this thing fair next to the wasr10/63? And if this thing is total crap what can i find for $500 or less that isn't a hunk of trash. Also does anyone know where i can find a drum mag for the ak 74's. Biggest reason i've held off is that i can find regular 47 stuff everywhere but i cannot find stuff for the 74 that easily.

For $390, I'd buy it. I prefer the 74 (5.45) to the 47 (7.62). Will the Fleet Farm let you try putting a magazine in the rifle to check for side-to-side wobble? I doubt you'll have any key-holing issues. As you stated, the issues with the barrels was supposed to have been resolved a year or two ago.

yes they will. theres no real mag wobble with the Polish Tantals, the issues everyone reported was with keyholing. 2 main concerns i have is can i find a drum mag for one and will it keyhole. if im spending $400 on a rifle i want it to work. I don't expect it to be the best rifle ever made but i dont want a heap of trash either.

I've never seen a Drum for a 74 Variant.

I own two. One for me, one for my son,,, they're awsome!

Where do you live that you're chared so much for an online order???
Most of the shops around here either charge $15.00 or 10-15%.
You're getting robbed by these dealers! IMHO,,,,,

i live in WI. i think it has to deal with the fact that places here want the business and know if you wont pay their price they can nickel and dime you. but im liking the feedback. i probably should have just bought it today but maybe ill pick one up fri or sat. i was trying to hold off till my car is paid off but price inflammation has me paranoid now.

They make drums for the 74, but they cost a fortune. The Tantal is a good design, go for it.

Default AK

If I were you I would stay away from that AK and buy one in 7.62 by 39. They are $30 dollars more at fleet and they sell all the accessories for the 47. Also ammo is everywhere for the 7.62.

Good luck,

unfortunately the fleets by me sell plain wasr 10's and based on my research its not worth getting a wasr unless its at least a 10/63. they do have the folding stock wasr10/63 but thats like a full $100 and i dont like that style stock. i think i'm going with the tantal for now and i can always buy a higher quality 47 in the future if i have more money.

One thing to think about, if there's mag wobble, it can be corrected by a good smith simply by deepening the mag well dimples.

Done properly, you most likely won't even notice any damage that couldn't be covered up by some cold blue.
