So I'm looking for books that will tell people the things they need to know in order to rebuild civilization in the event that something major happens. Farming, construction, blacksmithing, and more. From the basics to the advanced. I'm looking for everything in between that'll help people rebuild. Any and all suggestions in this regard is helpful.

Note: I do know there's a section for survival related books. I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for books that teach a person specific skills. One book dedicated to farming or another to welding. These types of books. Not books about "how to start a fire in a survival situation".

I suggest you get some actual printed books for important stuff like first aide. Download all the free books you can get. Many copies in different places with different devices. Faraday cage.

Don't forget good reference books like the Chemical Rubber Handbook, Machinist Handbook, older copies are often cheap at used book stores, the info is still good.

I have an old W7 laptop I going to use just for this purpose.

These are the books I read in Junior High School, Senior High School, and as a young adult that shaped me into who I am.

Fiction:

Have Space Suit, Will Travel by Robert A. Heinlein (An inspiration to me when I was young)
Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein (Socio/political commentary in novel form.)
And the rest of the works of Robert A Heinlein (for the same reasons as above.)
Bulldozer by Stephen W. Meader (Another inspirational story when I was in my teens.)
A Hero For Henry by Herbert R. Purdum (A great old west comedy with valuable lessons.)
An Elephant For Aristotle by L. Sprague de Camp (Another Socio/political commentary in novel form.)
The works of Louis L'Amour The westerns and Night Over The Solomons & West From Singapore
The works of Zane Gray
The works of Edgar Rice Burroughs especially Tarzan At The Earth’s Core
The works of Earle Stanley Gardner
The works of Andre Norton especially Sea Siege
The works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard
The works of Sandra Brown (Believe it or not, I learned a lot from romance novels.)
The works of Nora Roberts (Another fine romance novelist that gave me a lot to think about.)

Non-fiction:

Power! by Michael Korda (How to get it and how to use it for good or evil)

Breaking the Rules by Kurt Wright (A book and seminar that gave me great insights into people and how they treat each other and why)

Dress for Success by John T Molloy (More than just clothing. How people actually see each other and act accordingly. Urban camouflage that also teaches the hows and whys of field camouflage)

The Miss Manners Guides by Judith Martin (More than just manners. How people interact in many different situations.)

Just a few suggestions from my avid reading past.

Another vote for Wildwood Wisdom by Ellsworth Jaeger

Also, Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski.

but to take a step back - perhaps rebuilding civ is not warranted. maybe we should all let the earth take a breather and revitalize. maybe a pastoral life is what is needed... just pontificating here, not trying to sound like a tree hugger - not that there is anything wrong with that ;-)

Call your local libraries and ask if they have book sales. If you have more than one library, call each one. My area has a huge connected library system, but each library does their own annual book sale. There's at least 3 of them a year.

If will very by area, of course. In my area the books are dirt cheap and usually flat priced - for the first few days of the sale it's usually like $1 hardcover, .50 a paperback, etc. Then half price on Friday, and then on Saturday it's like $2-3 for as many as you can shove in a bag!

When I was in college in SC, I was so excited to see one of those book sales and me and a friend went on the last day of the sale, figuring we'd get some dirt cheap books. I was floored to find every book priced individually, and very high - $5-$15 for hardcover books! I didn't get anything and we quickly left.

But I have picked up some good books at my local ones. Lots of gardening books, how-to books, nature books. There's a series that National Geographic put out, a bunch of nice hardcovers each one covering various topics, and I've picked up over 100 of them there for pennies each.

If you're looking at the books and it's published by Rodale, don't bother looking at the title just grab it! They put out a lot of very useful gardening books many years ago.

I've always been a bibliophile (love of books!) and my dream home would be a mansion with an enormous library. If space isn't an issue for you, I would recommend getting plenty of historical books. I see Jerry had a few fiction books listed and those even for entertainment purposes will be useful in rebuilding society.

For a good selection of older, more classical books, check out Harvard's 5 foot shelf of books. You can often get these for free. I got a set that an school was just throwing away. I actually took it to a used book shop to see if it was worth anything and the guy told me he's already got 3 sets, there's so many of them and no one wants them anymore. I ended up giving it to a homeschool library. But it's a 54ish volume collection of important works from the last 2000 years.

As dealfinder mentioned, the Harvard Classics are awesome. Newer sets can be found but I have my grandfather's -- almost mint condition-- and the copyright in the last book is 1902? Most of the volumes are older. A treasure trove of literature.

I believe that the earth will have a breather. If we wind up in a full bore PAW (Post Apocalyptic World) I think it will be around 300-years before we really start getting to a point even close in technology to what we have now. And another 200-years or so before we can get to the point where we can get to the stars, which we are on the verge now.

Just my opinion.

THERE is a 4 volume set called "HOW THINGS WORK"

Breaks down generators pumps etc into language anyone could understand.

IT is actually mentioned in LUCIFER'S HAMMER as one of the books the professor was carrying when headed to the Senator's compound.
