Default Will there be a sell off of preps as lockdown lifts?

Anyone else remember after Y2K how all the scenario preppers where suddenly selling off generators and such at low prices the day after nothing happened?

We know there has been a huge surge in 'new preppers' buying supplies for Corona. Now that a lot states are treating this like its over do you think there will be a big sell off off of preps from these people who think that this is over and want to recoup the money they blew on 'panic buys?"

I'm wondering if a person could take advantage of this with proper timing. I'm fully sure it will be back and worse than ever in a month or two but there may be a window opening up this month of people who have been tricked into thinking this is over suddenly selling off unused preps and that the REAL preppers could stock up cheaply during the eye of the storm so to speak.

I don't think so. It seems like most of what's been bought is supplies, and ones that are normally pretty cheap at that. I think sales of toilet paper and food are going to lag pretty bad for a while the non-preppers use up what they've stockpiled. I'm sure there will be quite a few libs who decide to offload the icky/scary guns they decided to buy before they realized the "orange man bad MSM" lied to them about the severity of the pandemic though.

That is a tough call the make. I boil it down to several mindsets.

Some people, as soon as the lock down is lifted I look for them to get back to normal. There are people out there who act like nothing is happening. They go about their merry way as if it were a real life replay of Shaun of the Dead.

One group of people will probably maintain their stocks. They may even expand their stocks.

Another group, probably a lot of members of this forum will expand their preps. I know I will be expanding my preps of facemask. In fact, I am ordering more homemade facemask this evening.

Will people sell their preps? I imagine some will yes.

I will definitely get more N95s, but I will also get a full HAZMAT suit with SCBA. I will also add at least 2 Tyvek suits for lesser emergencies.

I have those things but a PAPR is so much better than an SCBA for this. That is what you should really be looking for.

I am thinking about what comes next. SCBA's are totally self contained air sources. Time is a limiting factor here, but it will give me complete protection against any inhaled airborne substance.

An SCBA will require a lot of bottles. One bottle will likely only last 30-45 minutes. Then you have to refill the bottles. Testing the bottle is another issue as well. You could find some units too old for fire departments to use but you likely won’t find anyone to fill them because they will be too old. PAPRs and such pull air in and filter the air. Level 4 bio labs use something like an SCBA but they are attached to air from a central source. You’re limited to how far the hose will go.
SCBA is really for limit use and no where near long term use by any means.

It will, but a PAPR will last for ten hours, doesn't require a high pressure compressor to refill (just a battery charge) and weighs a couple of pounds instead of 20-30lbs

The only thing you really need an SCBA for is environments with no oxygen, which is a pretty rare hazard.

You can also look into adapters. I have a pair of MSA SCAB units, but I have an adapter for them that replaces the air hose input with a pair of P100 filters.

But....a PAPR is so much nicer. No fogging, no stale air issues...no extra effort to breath. I really think its the way to go for 90% of hazards, and will run all day on a charge instead of 30-40 minutes on a heavy tank like an SCBA.

I have a half used roll of toilet paper for sale.

hahahahaha

The most aggressive buyer that I know, invested in a water system, which he plans to keep. And he also purchased a second genset, that would be big enough to run his appliances, which he plans to keep.

I don't think there will be sell-offs, from panic prepping.

Now, there are a ton of people without employment and those folks might start selling stuff to pay the bills. Might be some fire-sale bargains there.

I have a survivaire SCBA mask for sale on Bighampton NY craigs.

I sold a SCBA air compressor to a paint ball outfit in Pennsylvania a few years ago.
I wonder if a paint ball guy would fill out of date SCBA tanks?

Yes, I predict two things.

Near term, lots of unemployed people will be selling/sacrificing a lot of stuff so they can pay their mortgage. Toys, boats, guns, trailers, property, etc.

Long term, as people start to recover and don't immediately need preps, I see a lot of preps being sold like generators, boxed long-term food stuff, extra freezers, etc.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think there are a lot of people right now going to bed wishing they had bought this or that and are waiting for this to end or prices to drop so they can get it. So there might be a second surge of people buying up preps as it becomes available for the next year.

It is really going to depend on how this ends. With Y2K it was verified immediately. If this has multiple waves and gets heavily politicized throughout the election year it might stay on people's minds for a bit.

I'll be keeping and eye out for deals over the next while. I wouldn't mind a new generator. Or a custom '69 Chevelle

I have 50 rolls of unused TP I would like to trade for a new truck or a Mercedes E class.

I might throw in a respirator and a Tyvek suit if it has a seat warmer.

Sucks to be that shortsighted, if so... We're gonna keep an eye out for any 'surplus' / barely-used Harvest Rights, in particular.. Wanna buy one for Mom & Dad (in NY.. upstate, Not 'Skull Island' since they're Pretty good about 'stocking up', but.. They can't see much 'past the (albeit well stocked) Pantry', so.. I'm trying to get them to see the '1-2 Year +' perspective, not just 'worst case, 6 months' perspective (which is about where they're at..) Better than most, but..

..a Freeze Dryer can really help expand that to 1 yr+, without too much 'footprint impact'. Also going to get on Mom's posterior about getting her Canning-skills back in shape (She was always a 'mad-canner' when we were growing up, but.. with All the kids grown / out, they're not as 'worried' about anything much longer term beyond the 'Bad Ice Storm' / hardcore T-Storm / Snow-storm, maybe '6 months, tops' so..

Gotta 'fix' that..
