Default Warn and then ban the click-baiters

Advertise Here

Like most of you, I'm so sick and tired of clickbait titles and threads that are "continued at the link."

The poster rarely wants to create dialogue, but instead has some motive or financial incentive to drive traffic to a link, which is often filled with adverts or a paywall.

Please, can posters on this forum stop posting clickbait titles, and stop with the obscure threads that nobody can easily decipher without clicking on some link with no explanation? Or the "continued at site" nonsense.

I'd suggest this practice should get a warning, then a temp ban, and then a perma ban after 3 strikes.

They’re just doing what the media does.

You won’t believe what AOC said to Trump...read the next 24 pages with a half paragraph of text and 356 ads in each of them to get absolutely zero information.

A lot of it is people just don't think. I've seen titles like "tell me what you think of this" when it could just as easily have been "tell me what you think of XXXXX" and gave a clue about the thread. I've seen plenty of "I have a question" type titles that could have been worded better too. The ones that are trying to get you to click on ads are spammers and need to be reported so the mods can handle it.

I support banning them, but if you hover over the title for a second you can see the first sentence or two. If the post isn't any different than the title I skip it, same as if it is just a link to a video or another page.

Serious Preppers........not those here for the kicks and giggles entertainment.

Serious Preppers are spending more and more time on other forums that are actually focused on prepping and not entertainment BS. Yes they come here a little to visit, but most time is invested elsewhere.

This forum has had its ups and downs, but this coronavirus-19 has attracted a different group. I am sure the corporation that now owns this forum, is dancing with glee at the abundant clicks and current activity.

The way it is supposed to work is people put decent titles on their threads and take part in the discussion (adding tags at the bottom of the thread helps the search feature BTW) but people just don't give a damn anymore and want to use shock and awe titles or make you guess at what the hell they're talking about. Personally I am all for just deleting that kind of crap.

As for those posting links to their YouTube or some other website and nothing else... that is considered spamming the forum and very much against the rules.

Generally if it's a newbie and they post a link to their YouTube, I will take the time to look at the content and if it is useful content or something I think will be of interest to the members here I will send a pm to the poster and explain they can post links as long as they also describe the content in their post, hang around and take part in discussions about the content and be active in other threads as well.

Posting links and nothing else will get a person banned as a spammer if they keep it up.

Part of the problem is we can't see every post and every thread. We have more mods now but we also have families and this pandemic thing going on so we have other things to deal with like everyone else. We are human and miss stuff.

If people report threads like that we can see more of them and try to do something about it when we have time.

I knew it was against the old rules but I assumed you had given up on that because it is so common. I rarely follow a youtube link - they're mostly a gross waste of time. If a person can't make a comment/summary about what's in the video, why should I watch it. Other sites are mostly the same scenario. Giving a link as a source for what you report is fine, but don't skip the report just because "it's all at the link."

So, thanks leadcounsel even though I have you on ignore. I will start reporting again and see if it has any effect.

Does the rule apply to posts in a thread or just the OP? Like when there's a reply with only a link but no comment on what it is supposed to tell us?

Why would you have him on ignore?
I disagree with him some times but he has
never been a troll or rude in any way.

If you don't answer I will assume I am on
ignore also.

Truck Vet, I don't recall, could've been 9-11. Not him AFAIK, but Religion is what did it for many. And people insulting Southerners is another. And of course just being an idiot. Without the ignore option, I'd have been long gone (p.s., anybody know where JDY went). But further discussion is OT for here I think.

OK, Justme11, I didn't want to be a nuisance, but I guess they'll let me know if I am.

Thanks for the reply.

There is no denying he has irritated me a few times, but his perspective
has been a valuable resource for me and I would suggest you put up
with it.

There are a lot of people out there that say a lot of disagreeable things,
but we can learn from them. President Trump is one of them. If I accepted
what he said through the Media's filter I would be miserable he is President.
Context is every thing.

People actually think Trump is an idiot because he wants you to inject bleach
into yourself. He never said anything close to that. If you get everything
Lead Council says secondhand because you have him on ignore your
doing yourself a disservice because you judge him based on Gossip.

Evil Lawyers like Obama and the Clintons tried to ruin this country.
The only way we can see though their smoke shield of lies is to
try to understand them. This is one reason why Lead Council is
such a valuable resource. He is a Lawyer who actually cares about
this county.

I realize its easy for me to say. Even though I graduated High School in
SC I have lived in enough places that he could insult them all and
it wouldn't bother me. Most of my Ancestors stepped off the ship at
Ellis Island between 1902-8.

JDY decided this place wasn't for him anymore.... nothing malicious... just that SB had evolved to something that no longer needed his contribution... he's elsewhere, not too hard to find...

...we still have his stories though..

Yes it does apply to posts inside a thread.

Not an entirely accurate statement... Jerry still stops by on occasion, he just doesn't feel like moderating anymore (and I can understand that really well)

A shame we can't ban those popup video ads here. About the only thing I dread coming here, "can I stop the loading before the vid ad kicks in".

Absent me posting his DM to me... it's as accurate as if he were standing next to me, whispering it in my ear, and I was then turning to you and paraphrasing what he told me...

but yea....
