Change Of Plans

I've been planning for some time to move from Marxist Colorado to southwestern Utah (around St. George) but just changed my mind. I'm heading to the Prescott, AZ area instead. The possible job I had lined up in Utah didn't pan out. So I'm heading to Prescott or Prescott Valley or some nearby town in early August. I'm going on faith. I have no job lined up nor a place to live. It will be a true adventure. I'll either find a nice niche or I'll starve to death trying.

Prescott and Prescott Valley are both nice. If you don't mind living a little further out, homes are not as expensive in the Chino Valley area.

I just looked at Chino Valley on the City Data site. It appears to have a fairly high crime rate. Not quite as high as the national average. Murders are very low but assaults and burglaries are pretty high on the list. On Safewise's site, Prescott Valley made the top 20 (#11) for the safest cities in Arizona. I'll have to take these facts into consideration. I wonder why Chino Valley has such a high crime rate.

I've sent numerous resumes via Indeed.com to a number of companies in the area. I've also sent emails to a few realtors who have available rentals. I just did all of this yesterday and am hoping to hear back from people throughout the week. I'm giving my current company a 3 week notice on Tuesday. They won't be happy and may let me go immediately (which would be fine with me).

Prescott and Prescott Valley are kind of pricey areas to jump into without a job. Hopefully you have a good sized savings account.

Even then it's a good way to deplete your finances and set back prepping (or retirement) schedule.

I noticed that when I checked out some apartment sites. Some of the one-bedroom places are starting at $1200.0 or more. Outrageous! I'm thinking about looking into mobile home rentals on the outskirts. After I settle in and get to know the area, I can look into buying some land.

How about Dewey? What do you know about that area?

#10 ·
Dewey had some issues at one point with shoddy construction by the tract home builders on expansive soils. There are a number of lawsuits still working their way through. I'm not sure what the water situation is.

Being familiar with the area Steve_in_29 is located, if you're looking for land that is the place to be. It's not far over to Alpine / Luna Lake where you are guaranteed to freeze your nubbies off in the dead of winter. But some fantastic elk in the area as well.

#11 ·
A couple weeks ago we had a nice sized elk jog across our county road in front of us as we were heading to the house. It was less then a mile from our place.

Last night over dinner our neighbor was telling us about how his daughter's school (in St John's) got locked down when a bear was right outside a classroom. I didn't catch how long ago it was but it had to be fairly recent as they have only lived here for 3 years.

We've been looking around AZ for a while now (stuck in Cali), and some friends of ours just moved to Prescott Valley, others are on the way as well. Went over to help them move and put up some corrals....Very nice area! A bit pricey (well not compared to So Cal) but if you're willing to live 30 miles away, you can find some nice acreage with decent houses for $300k ish.
Also nice and a bit cheaper in Texas......

I'm hoping that the Californians fleeing that state leave in two groups: The Libtards can escape the mess they created and take their votes to Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, etc. The intelligent Californians (conservatives) can move to Texas, Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Missouri, and other pro-Constitution states. I'm moving to a conservative state and bringing my vote with me.

I'd say that the majority of the jobs I've held started out through a job finder like Indeed or Monster. But I've never been hired until I've shown up in person and shook the hand.

I'm moving blind. I used to do this sort of thing a lot in my youth and found it invigorating, challenging, exciting, and a bit scary.

If I were still married I wouldn't even consider making this move but I simply won't remain in Colorado. It's passing anti-gun laws and legalizing hallucinogenic drugs. It's owned and operated by Marxists and with all the druggies moving into town, the votes will assure that the Commies remain in control for many years to come.

Anyway, I gave my notice yesterday. My last day will be August 2nd. I have to be out of my rental by the 12th. So I'm giving myself 10 days to get moved into a place and to find a job I'll also use that time to register my vehicle; get a new driver's license; and any other official activities that I think of.

Prior to moving, I'm going to get a DOT physical and the subsequent DOT Medical card. I'll also get an up-to-date print out of my clean driving record. That way, I'll be prepared to seek a Commercial driver job somewhere. Companies are always looking for drivers.

We need more conservatives. Have too many California, Oregon and Washington transplants in this area. I trust none of them.

#22 ·
Hey now!!!

#34 ·
Thanks. Unfortunately ... I'm hitting bricks when it comes to finding employment or housing. The prices for some of the apartment are higher than I'm already paying. I found a place in Chino Valley that was a brand new kit home but there were already 30 applications and the renter wouldn't rent to me unless I could see it in person before 8/1/19. The earliest I can be there is 8/5/19. It would have been $950.00 per month for a 2 bedroom.

So my hopes went way up then came crashing back down. I haven't given up but moving there won't be as easy as I had thought or hoped it would be.

A few things. If you read some of the threads over at city-data forums, the Prescott area has been experiencing a huge influx of California transplants over the years which is part of what has driven the prices so high. And while a great number of them are good conservatives (we here like to try to call ourselves mostly libertarian), however there have been sightings of the liberals whining and stomping their feet with thier protest signs by the court house.

Tucson is considered to be pretty liberal too. Also from threads at city-data forums. Yes, you'll see plenty of postings by me over there, you should check out one that has a life of its own saying Arizona is a terrible state, lol. Tucson's even gotten a resolution on the November ballot to make themselves a sanctuary city.

Otherwise, your plan sounds very familiar. My first escape from the C.S.S.R. was over 20 years ago to Pinetop. I had a car with most my stuff in it and $500. Three weeks later I was working full time in the industry that has become a career for me. Things happened and I had to leave for about 12 years to WA state, but my heart was always here on the mountain. Moved back almost three years ago just about the same way, except I had a bunch of savings and my resume was much more filled out. No car camping. About two weeks after starting to search, again I landed a fairly good paying job in my industry, building material sales as a purchasing agent/inventory manager.

So, a long story so I'll stop here, but hey, why not a little encouragement, right?

p.s. Arizona is a state pre-emptive state, whereby no local law can supersede state laws, especially gun laws.

Since I live in this area, a LOT of those Californians I see are driving the Prius, Bolts, Volts or other hybrid cars. Many still with the CA plates. The truly dedicated still wear the "coexist", "Feel the Bern", of "I made a mistake being with her" stickers.

LOL....you are a little behind. Tucson is VERY liberal. The ballot measure if passed is to make their sanctuary city status official.

That's not stopping Tucson from trying.

In answer to a PM from another forum member: I did the City Data comparison between the two cities you mentioned. LOL. See what I mean? In almost every case ... the "whiter" the town or city the lower the crime rate. The statistics don't lie.

Just stating the facts ma'am ... just stating the facts.

Another job local to St John's is the State Prison.

They are always advertising for hiring correctional officers. I believe the vacancies have more to do with people not wanting to live out here in the boonies then something like poor working conditions.

Just applied for a place to live in Payson, AZ. Frantically looking for employment there. I was a total idiot for letting my Class A, HazMat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples license lapse in September 2017. I held it for 25 years then decided I didn't need it anymore.

For anyone contemplating letting your commercial license lapse ... DON'T DO IT! You never know when you may need to fall back on it.

I can get it back but it requires an actual road test and I don't have access to a vehicle so taking the test is impossible at this time.

So I take it the Elk City gig isn't happening?

If you don't find something soon I think your best option is to accept the job in Mesa. That gets you a foothold in AZ which you can use as a staging area to locate something more to your liking at a later date.

Of all the places (rental companies) I've applied to, only one has responded and it's the one in St. George, UT and they will have an opening. It's a new complex just built in Hurricane (just outside of St. George). It's also the only town where the business community has responded to my job applications. I'm getting a major "cold shoulder" from Arizona and Oklahoma. Soooo ... hmmmm. The path seems to be taking me instead of me taking it.

So my current area according to area vibes:
Crime: A+
Demographics:
Speak English 100%
Speak Spanish 0%

The blurb:
The median age is 32 which is approximately 14% lower than the Arizona average of 37. 20% of the population over 15 years of age are married, 73% of residents were born in Arizona, 27% were born out of state, 0% were born outside of the United States and 0% were foreign born.

Right on... it is almost like there is some kind of correlation going on here?

My kinda place! I think I've made up my mind though. I just contacted an apartment complex in Hurricane, UT and asked how to proceed. From where I live, the drive there would be a straighter shot than going to Prescott Valley or surrounding area. I really preferred the idea of living there but I hit too many dead ends and without any promising leads whatsoever.

I don't want to live in or around Phoenix. Been there and done that back in the late 70s. Too hot and too sprawling. And ... to much crime/Spanish. :taped:

Thanks. My first wife was Mormon (Jack Mormon) and we stayed with her staunchly religious parents in Logan for a few months (a year maybe?). They were hardcore preppers and planted that seed in me. However, Logan was colder than the Arctic in the winter. That valley was at a very low point where the cold loved to hover. Cache Valley.

Anyway ... I'm excited. I have a lot of work to do and a short amount of time to do it in. By myself, mind you. I sometimes wish I hadn't chosen the life of a loner but there's a certain simplicity to it.

Roger that.

Moving to Hurricane, Utah and next to AJ so I can rustle his jimmies. I'll play loud Indian music I don't even understand, and invite over local Democrats who live off of socialist handouts to barbecue for me since it's how they cook anyway, and fly a flag from Mexico not next to, but above the red white and blue, and slap Democrat lives matter posters all over the windows.

I’ve lived in Pinetop (22 years), Show Low (21 years), and Snowflake (2 years). Low crime (mostly drugs and cops: weak minded affliction, never affected me). Some of the best water in the world but it’s all underground. Mild weather:

-14F below on occasion, only short periods of extreme cold
-windy in the Spring (70 mph and a few microbursts)
-short growing season but some of my best success
-monsoons bringing rain
-snowfall not what it used to be but it snows

Sounds awesome. I just wish I could have gotten even a little feedback from the folks there. It was so quiet, I could hear crickets in Phoenix. So ... I'm headed for the St. George, UT area at the end of next week.

I got another call from FedEx in southern Utah yesterday. It looks like a "go." They want to see me in person to hand me the written job offer. I'm also on the edge of moving into a really nice and new, 2-bedroom apartment within my budget. I wanted a 1-bedroom but they didn't have any available at the moment. They have all of my information and my lease application. They, too, said everything is a go "once they get a copy of the job offer." That puts a kink in the works. I need to have that finalized so I can move my furniture in the moment I get there but I won't get the letter until a couple of days AFTER I get there. Nothing can ever go smoothly for me!

So here's the bottom line for the time being. I'm selling as many things as I can so I can make my trip to the Prescott Valley area as light and simple as possible and to put as much money in my pocket as I can. I will need the prayers of those of you who believe in the power of prayer. Why? Because I will be homeless and jobless when I arrive. I'm only going to bring with me what will fit in the cab of my truck; the bed of my truck; and a 8x4 U-Haul trailer. When I arrive, I will put most of that stuff in a storage unit. I'll find the cheapest hotel I can find then I'll start right out looking for a job in Prescott Valley or any of the nearby towns (Prescott, Chino Valley, Dewey, etc.). I may even take a drive to Wickenburg and see what that town has to offer.

Any suggestions or leads are welcome.

The apartment I was scheduled to rent required an "offer letter" from my future employer but they wouldn't give me an offer letter until I showed up face to face. I asked them to create a letter showing a stipulation that I would be offered the job if I met their particular criteria. They (I sent the request to the two top dogs) didn't bother to respond.

So I had to think about what I really wanted and, more importantly, where I really wanted to live. I prefer Prescott Valley over St. George. Also, the FedEx job didn't pay much and didn't offer any benefits so it's not like I'm missing the opportunity of a lifetime.
