Just before Sean Hannity went off he reported breaking news that the Secretary of Defense has authorized an infantry battalion of about 16,000 troops into the Washington DC area. Anybody know anything more? It's going to get interesting now.

I had this discussion with Colt earlier. I thought a battalion was only about 300. Thats what I remember from 20 years ago and he was saying that many was a division. Like another poster said. Sean probably got the wording wrong. But he said about 16,000 troops. So who knows anymore. We'll just have to see.

Adm. Mullen showed his true colors tonight by not being in support of the President's decision. Kennedy sent troops to Alabama in 1963. LBJ called up the NG in 1965. In Alabama no less. LBJ sent the 3/187 to Detroit in 1967. So there is a history of Presidents using their authority to quell riots.

Adm. Mullen is clearly very confused over the difference between a peaceful protest and a riot.

In American Army terms, 16,000 troops technically means a Division.

In this case, the better part of 2-3 Army BCTs (Brigade Combat Teams of about 4000ish folks each) plus associated Divisional HQ & Support elements. Including aviation units, which can be deployed in significant strength (Combat Aviation Brigade) all by themselves. Plus a grab bag of elements assigned from elsewhere to provide unique capabilities.

Including composite Joint force structure from sister services. Army, Marines, Navy, & USAF personnel/elements integrated under a common HQ. But with a core of one or more infantry or armored brigade/regimental structures. And the overall Commander usually from the service providing those core combat elements.

Deployed to combat overseas, a typical divisional structure can go 20,000+ folks. Sometimes 25,000. Easily.

According to later news reports... 1,600... not 16,000.

I had a feeling he either missunderstood, wanted to freak people out or read the numbers wrong. Maybe a little bit of all 3.
