This is a re-post from another forum. I think all of us who are interested in the success of our neighbours to the south would appreciate hearing from those with better knowledge of the situation.

My Spanish is not the Best, but...

After expressing the sceptical opinion above, I went looking in the Mexican media to see what views were being expressed there.

From some of the criticism the President Enrique Pena Nieto is taking, it sounds like some of these vigilante/self-defense groups may be legitimately grass-roots and anti-cartel.

In fact, unless I'm misunderstanding this, it actually seems pretty funny that there’s a Mexican politician accusing the President of undermining the tranquility of the country by taking advice from a Colombian as to how to drive out the cartels!

From milenio.com, 14 Jan 2014, I gather that the out-of-power left-of-centre PRD party is suggesting that the recent upsurge of local self-defense organizations in the State of Michoacan (and Guerrero/Acapulco?) is due to the influence of a Colombian advisor to center-socialist PRI President Pena Nieto, as this is allegedly the same tactic used successfully in Colombia to rid itself of the cartels there.

He says, "It's suspicious that right after the rise of a Colombian advisor in the country, there was a surge in this type of self defense group. One has to know whether the government is not only tolerating, but supporting and financing these types of self defense groups, and if there are businesses supporting them, and who they are."

"He also said it should be investigated what type of advice this person is giving, and, if warranted at this time, consider expelling him from the country for meddling in the internal affairs of public security."

Hope it's okay to reprint (with credit), rather than just posting a link, so others can correct me if I'm misquoting or taking this the wrong way.
