a short video and discussion on how i feel about knives in general, and some thoughts on criteria for deciding what tool suits the task you wish it to preform.

i have been getting alot of questions in my inbox here and on other forums.

i hope this video is able to help you too.

The Kabar story you were trying to quote was actualy a letter sent to the knife company in very poor english from a trapper who had killed a bear with his knife and somehow thats how the Ka-bar Knife Company was re-named, I can't remember the original name but the new one has been forever been wrongly associated with the USMC Fighting Knife.
Called the "Kabar Knife" for ages people often forget that the Ka-bar company only manufactured a fraction of the USMC knives and the design was only thiers by original concept, the original was massively reworked by the Marine Corp and thus they actualy did the final design of the USMC Combat Knife.
Ontario Knife Company is another company that makes the USMC knife but still with a superior parkerized finnish that actualy holds oil pretty well instead of the silly plastic crap that most modern knives are burdened with.
Anyone, good post!
cheers

the first company to produce the USMC fighting knife was Camillus. you are right that the company received a letter about the incident i spoke of in the video.

thanks for your comment though, at least its got you thinking. thanks for contributing!

Oh I forgot to add one correction, what you refer to as a "rat tail" tang on the USMC knife is actualy a "hidden full" tang, an actual rat tail tang is a peice of metal welded onto the blade and is often nothing more than a long bolt-thus the "rat tail" name.
The weakest part of the full hidden tang is often the stress riser created by a 90 degree angle where the blade is reduced but considering the abuse I've seen these knives take it realy is more of an academic debate as to how much of a weakness the stress riser causes. On paper it is in theory a critical flaw but in function it is much less so.
Oh and congrats on the competition!
cheers
